Full Version: Keyboard shortcut and navigations
Kaspersky Lab Forum > English User Forum > Suggestions for current and future versions of KL products
Young Man
Dear Kaspersky Developers, I am a visually impaired person and I use screen reader to access my computers. First of all, I would like to appologise if this post is a bit longer.
Let me explain what I've done and what I hope KL can do to make Kav/Kis accessible with the blind in the future.

I have tes out the following kaspersky products:

1. Kis6.0/7.0
2. Kav6.0/7.0

From the test conducted by myself, I found that Kaspersky Interface cannot be access using keyboard. This means that all features/menu need to be click using the mouse.

As visually impaired user, most of us uses keyboard to navigate/access the windows/program interface. That is why Microsoft design each menus in windows to have specific keyboard shortcut.

I hope that Kaspersky Lab will look into this matter deeply and setup the interface for Kaspersky Internet Security/Antivirus to be keyboard-accessible. What we need:

1. Keyboard shortcut to access menus E.g, Alt+s for settings.
2. To be able to navigate the interface like using the Tab key to navigate through menus, , Up/down arrow to read the display protection status etc.

Should you need more info, do contact me and I'll try my best to assist in this matter. I will also be willing to test the release if there's any.

Thank you.

Hello
Tab works for navigating though in version 8, however keyboard shortcuts are problematic as they can also offer ways for malware to reconfigure things.
Young Man
So, if Tab works for navigating, can we just press enter to enter into a menu/settings?
Then how about protection status etc? can it be navigate via keyboard?
Young Man
I believe that there's option for setting password before users can modified settings. then is keyboard shortcuts still problematic?
Lucian Bara
the problem is with popups, because inside the settings there are always shortcut keys and always were, these are the underlined letters in different sentances, and you can use alt+ the key to uncheck/check those.

the problem is that you can't ask for password for every popup it would be annoying to always have to input it, plus if you get a popup while you are working you may accidentally allow/deny it without looking.
Young Man
Oh I see, So I'm thinking on how to make keyboard navigation possible.
We visually impaired person relies very much on keyboard.
Lucian Bara
well, theoretically you can keep version 8 in automatic mode so you don't get popups. and navigation through tab works, and you have keyboard shortcuts (problem is figuring them out for example, in settings>protection Enabling/disabling "Launch kaspersky anti-virus on startup" can be toggled with ALT+l because L is underlined.

That's a good idea. If I compare Kaspersky Internet Security/AntiVirus 6 & 7,
I found that the interface for Kaspersky 6 is quite accessible with my screen reader whereas Kaspersky 7 does not.

I'll try Kaspersky 8 once the trial of my Kaspersky 7 finish.
Lucian Bara
you may have to disable self defense in settings>Service. kis attempts to protect itself from other applications messing around with it.
Young Man
Dear Lucian Bara, After I investigate further, Keyboard shortcut actually is the most important part for the blind to be able to use Kaspersky products with screen readers.
Although this is known to be vonourable, we have no choice rather then to implement keyboard shortcut.

Kaspersky does not, in any way cause conflict with screen readers. It just need to be improve to make it accessible for the blind. Would it be a good idea if a special screen reader mode is setup for keyboard navigation?

Do let me know also if you'd like to try out some of the screen readers.
Lucian Bara
i don't think it's a priority, as i said the settings allow keyboard accelerators, however the screenreader probably won't tell you which keys the accelerator keys are

In that case, would you kindly send me the keyboard shortcut for Kaspersky Internet security 8? I'll be trying it next week and see how it works with my screen reader.
Lucian Bara
well, you can use tab to navigate around in kis 8. as for keyboard shortcuts, what functions do you need?
Young Man
Hi, I've try out Kaspersky Internet security 8. My screen reader (JAWS) was unable to read anything when I tab around the program window. I guest this is due to the graphical user interface. The interface of the installation is fine as I am able to install the programme well.
The activation window is terrible for me as the screen reader cannot read it.

So, I think its time a special screen reader mode is setup whereby there's no diagram on the programme window and also the menu. At this point, I think that Kaspersky internet security 6.0.2.621 can be the prototype since the protection status and most of the menus can be access with screen reader.

Finally, It would be very helpfull if a special help topic for keyboard navigation is included with all the keyboard shortcut compiled inside.

disable self defense in settings>options and try again, it mayu be blocking programm access to kis.
Young Man
Sir, what are you talking about here? I am not saying that Kis interfeer with any application of my screen reader. There's nothing to do with self defence etc. I just say that something needs to be change in the Kaspersky interface to enable screen readers to read the menus etc. Lastly, I suggest a compilation of keyboard shortcut for KIS/KAV to enable screen reader users to work with the application.

Lucian Bara
so you are saying the screenreader can not read parts of the interface?
the microsoft narator doesn't seem to have problems with interpreting the interface.
Young Man
OK, so then how do you click on any item using keyboard? is it possible to tab to the setting menu and press enter?
Its not just navigation but how can we acccess any popups that will come out using keyboard?

yes it's possible to tab and use arrow keys (left side tree can be scrolledwith up/down arrows) and the settings on a page with tab, but you need to press space, not enter

popups you can't, that's why it's recommended to use the auto mode
Young Man
So, how to set everything to auto mode for Kis8? and, how do I allow/deny anything if the popups for the firewall came out?

I think Popups also need to be keyboard-accessible so we can decide to allow/deny any application changes.
Lucian Bara
well it works with the arrow keys+space.
Young Man
So then how too configure everything to run in silent mode? and does the popup to allow/deny changes in any execution program can be navigated using space and arrow?
