So Gentoo knows about the NIC (lspci op), but doesn't load a driver for it (never gets to DHCP; and desktop network config doesn't list the NIC for config selection using the desktop menu apls). Gentoo knows about the system RAM (12MB), so the 'no enough memory' error from Kaspersky Rescue Tool apl seems to be an apl level bug (ie. not Gentoo's fault),on the surface of it. I could put in another generic NIC (eg. Realtek card) to get around the NIC issues I suppose - prefer not to. The 'no enough memory' error on the surface appears to be a bug in the application as opposed to the environment.' Looking for genuine helpful advice.
