Changing user not possible on Android 9 without parent login

Hi all,

I am getting my kid a new phone. We jump from Android 5.1.1 to 9.0. On the 5.1.1 device we have 2 accounts. The first (smartphone owner) was managed by Google Family Link and the second by Kaspersky Safe Kids. We have been able to switch between the two accounts without problems as long as the time limits on both accounts permitted. This setup was created to run some app under the 2nd user only to block it from accessing private information of the 1st account (Android 5 does not provide blocking access to certain data).

On the new phone running Android 9 this is no longer possible. I can always switch from the 1st account (managed by Google Family Link) to the 2nd. However, when I try to switch back from the 2nd (managed by KSK) I cannot unless I login with my parent account.

This way my kid will not be able to use the new phone the way the old one has been used.

Is there any way to get the previous behavior back? I.e., switch from the KSK managed account to the other without the need to login as parent?

Regards, Kasper

Hello @Kasper Ski

Welcome!

  1. How old is your child please?
  2. Before Google family, when the phone is actually setup is the Android owner (you) the parent or the child - for example, to access Google Play Store is that done using your Google account?
  3. Regarding “2 accounts: the first (smartphone owner) was managed by Google Family Link “ is that  Google Family Link for parents or Google Family Link for children & teenagers app?
  4. Regarding “run some app under the 2nd user only to block it from accessing private information of the 1st account - which apps please?
  5. Regarding “Android 5 does not provide blocking access to certain data”, which data?

We’re working thru the already provided information, having clarification will enable us to specifically target the issue and try to help you find a solution.

Please  post back?

Thank you🙏

Hello @Kasper Ski

  • After testing this for the past 6 hrs, and without data, I have, on the child’s device: KSKGoogle Family Link for children & teenagers app working in harmony, not seeing any conflict - apart from duplication's - which (imo) is unnecessary, but, you may have a reason, unknown to us atm, that would explain the logic🤔

Please  post back?

Thank you🙏

Hi Flood,

sorry for the delay.
To answer your questions first:

  1. How old is your child please?
    12 years

  2. Before Google family, when the phone is actually setup is the Android owner (you) the parent or the child - for example, to access Google Play Store is that done using your Google account?

It’s the child’s account that actually is the owner. It is later restricted by installing Google Family Link.

  3. Regarding “2 accounts: the first (smartphone owner) was managed by Google Family Link “ is that  Google Family Link for parents or Google Family Link for children & teenagers app?

It’s Google Family Link for children & teenagers. The management app is installed on my phone.

  4. Regarding “run some app under the 2nd user only to block it from accessing private information of the 1st account - which apps please?

    It’s Pokemon Go.
Pokemon Go requires access to contacts. On Android 5.1.1 I can’t restrict an installed app. it’s just take it or leave it.

  5. Regarding “Android 5 does not provide blocking access to certain data”, which data?

As mentioned above it’s about the contacts I do not want to share with Niantic. So I set up a second account with no contacts at all. This uses another Google account as well. This Google account now is used to store all the Pokemons that already have been collected.

Again: On my kid’s device I can always switch from the Google Family Link account to the KSK account. However, switching back is not possible unless I login using my Kaspersky account. Currently, my kids restarts the phone to gain access to the first account again.

A note: I am using the free version of KSK. I am not sure if the “multi user functionality” is available in the paid version only.

Regards, Kasper
