The HarmonyO S4.2.0system modified by Huawei on the basis of Android 12 will not damage Kaspersky's ability to scan and kill malicious software, right?

Is the ability of Kaspersky to run on a regular Android 12 system the same?

Screenshot_20241026_155733.jpg

And is this viewpoint reasonable?

Hello @jjjhjkhjkhkjh

That's a great question!

When considering the compatibility of Kaspersky security software with HarmonyOS, there are a few important points to keep in mind:

  1. Ecosystem Compatibility: Harmony-OS, developed by Huawei, has its own set of APIs and framework which may not fully support all third-party security software. Kaspersky, traditionally focused on Windows, macOS, and Android, would need specific adaptations to work effectively on Harmony-OS.

  2. Official Support: It’s crucial to check whether Kaspersky officially supports Harmony-OS. The best source for this information would be Kaspersky's official website or their customer support. They may have specific products designed or optimized for the Harmony-OS environment.

  3. User Feedback: If Kaspersky software is available for Harmony-OS, user reviews and feedback can provide insights into its performance and compatibility. Look for forums, tech review sites, or community discussions focused on Harmony-OS users.

  4. Ecosystem Compatibility:Also just come to my attention that Harmony OS, developed by Huawei, exists in two versions: Harmony OS, which still uses the Android kernel, and Harmony OS NEXT, a fully self-developed mobile operating system that no longer relies on the Android kernel. This distinction is essential because compatibility with Kaspersky and other third-party security software may vary between these versions. Kaspersky, traditionally focused on Windows, macOS, and Android, would need specific adaptations to work effectively on Harmony OS NEXT, given its unique framework.

  5. Official Support: It’s crucial to check whether Kaspersky officially supports Harmony OS or Harmony OS NEXT. The best source for this information would be Kaspersky's official website or their customer support. They may have specific products designed or optimized for these different Harmony OS environments.

User Feedback: If Kaspersky software is available for either Harmony OS or Harmony OS NEXT, user reviews and feedback can provide insights into its performance and compatibility. Look for forums, tech review sites, or community discussions focused on users of both Harmony OS versions.

Alternatives: If Kaspersky is not compatible, consider other reputable security solutions that are confirmed to work with Harmony OS or Harmony OS NEXT. Always opt for well-reviewed software from trusted vendors.

To ensure you have the best protection, you should always confirm compatibility directly from the software vendor or reputable tech sources before installation.

Thank you

Hello, @KarDip

Harmony OS NEXT, It is a self-developed mobile phone operating system, which does not use the Android kernel, and Harmony OS still uses the Android kernel. This needs to be clarified. 🙂

Hello @Wesley.Zhang

Thanks for pointing that out slipped my mind.

Hi Guys

Kaspersky has not yet officially announced support for HarmonyOS Next, so compatibility isn't fully confirmed. However, here are some points to consider regarding potential Kaspersky compatibility with HarmonyOS Next:

  1. App Compatibility with Huawei Ark Compiler: Since HarmonyOS Next apps run on the Huawei Ark Compiler instead of Android, Kaspersky’s current Android-based apps may not directly work on this OS without adjustments. For Kaspersky to support HarmonyOS Next, it may need to release a version compiled or adapted specifically for the HarmonyOS ecosystem.

  2. Huawei Mobile Services (HMS): Kaspersky might choose to integrate with HMS, as Huawei has shifted from Google’s GMS to HMS across its ecosystem. Any Kaspersky app that adapts to HMS could potentially run on HarmonyOS Next, provided it is designed to be compatible with Huawei’s APIs.

  3. Cloud and Network Compatibility: If Kaspersky’s security tools involve cloud-based services (such as updates and real-time threat data), they would likely need to work with Huawei’s cloud infrastructure, which is fully integrated within the HarmonyOS ecosystem.

  4. Future Possibilities: Given the growth of HarmonyOS and Huawei’s increased market share in China and other regions, security software vendors like Kaspersky may see value in developing versions compatible with HarmonyOS Next.

If you need Kaspersky security on a HarmonyOS device in the future, checking Kaspersky’s announcements or Huawei’s AppGallery for HarmonyOS-compatible security apps would be best. Alternatively, HarmonyOS does offer its own built-in security features, though they may not provide the same level of specialized protection Kaspersky offers.

Thank you

@卡迪普@Wesly.Zhang

Thank you guys.

1.Based on your discussion, can we conclude that Kaspersky functions equally well on HarmonyOS as it does on Android, but HarmonyOS NEXT still requires software adaptation?

2.What are your thoughts on the viewpoints presented in the following picture ?

Hello @ jjhkjhjknjkh

  • Kaspersky on HarmonyOS vs. Android: Generally, Kaspersky's antivirus and VPN software performs effectively on Android and has been adapted for HarmonyOS to ensure similar performance and security standards. However, HarmonyOS NEXT is a newer evolution of Huawei's operating system, integrating more unique architecture and system components, which might require additional software adaptation for complete compatibility and optimized functionality. This could mean some features or updates may initially lag behind or need tailored adjustments to match the HarmonyOS NEXT environment fully.
  • Thoughts on Viewpoints Presented in the Picture:

  • The viewpoint you’ve provided argues that third-party antivirus software isn’t necessary on modern smartphones since most now come with built-in security mechanisms designed by the OS providers themselves (like Google for Android, Apple for iOS, and Huawei for HarmonyOS). This perspective suggests that integrated security is optimized for the device, often consuming less power and potentially having fewer performance impacts than external solutions.

Here are some insights on the validity of this viewpoint:

  • Built-in Security and Battery Consumption: Native security features are indeed designed to integrate efficiently with the OS, usually minimizing power usage and avoiding compatibility issues. Major OS developers, like Google and Apple, continuously update their built-in security mechanisms, such as Google Play Protect for Android and Apple's App Store protections, to monitor and respond to threats.

  • Depth and Scope of Protection: Third-party antivirus software often offers a broader range of features, such as real-time malware detection, phishing protection, VPNs, app and web filtering, and even privacy management tools. These features can enhance security beyond the scope of what’s natively provided, which can be crucial for users who need comprehensive protection.

  • Ultimately, while native security may be sufficient for many users, third-party antivirus and security tools can provide valuable, additional layers of defense depending on individual needs and usage habits.

  • Use Case for Advanced Security Needs: For users who require additional layers of protection due to high exposure to sensitive data or potential threats (like accessing less-regulated app sources or regularly handling confidential information), third-party tools can be beneficial.

  • Battery and Performance Concerns: Third-party software can be more power-intensive if it’s always running in the background for real-time monitoring, though some modern security apps have improved in this area. Selecting reputable, lightweight solutions tailored to mobile OS performance can mitigate these concerns.

  • Thank you

@KarDip@Wesly.Zhanghi guys.I have I have another interesting question:

If an Android mobile malware "A" evolves into variants to adapt to customized systems based on Android, such as those used by Huawei or Xiaomi, including adaptations for systems like HarmonyOS (not HarmonyOS NEXT), can antivirus software detect and eliminate these variant malwares?

If an Android mobile malware "A" evolves into variants to adapt to customized systems based on Android, such as those used by Huawei or Xiaomi, including adaptations for systems like HarmonyOS (not HarmonyOS NEXT), can antivirus software detect and eliminate these variant malwares?

Hello @jjjhjkhjkhkjh

Yes, modern antivirus software like Kaspersky which is designed for Android-based systems, including customized platforms like those used by Huawei or Xiaomi, and adaptations for systems like HarmonyOS, can detect and eliminate malware variants.

Here’s why and how:

1. Signature-based Detection

Antivirus solutions maintain a database of known malware signatures. If the malware "A" variants retain identifiable code, structure, or behavior patterns from the original, these can still be recognized using signature-based detection. Antivirus vendors regularly update these databases to include signatures for newly discovered variants.

2. Heuristic and Behavioral Analysis

Even if the malware has evolved to change its signature, most modern antivirus software uses heuristic and behavioral analysis to detect suspicious activities. This includes:

  • Monitoring for unusual app permissions or behaviors (e.g., accessing sensitive data, excessive battery usage, or communication with known malicious servers).
  • Detecting patterns of code or execution flows commonly associated with malware.

3. Compatibility with Customized Systems

Customized systems like Huawei's EMUI or Xiaomi's MIUI are still largely based on Android. Thus, antivirus solutions designed for Android are generally compatible. For HarmonyOS (not HarmonyOS NEXT), which is Android-compatible at its core, existing Android-focused detection mechanisms would also apply.

4. Cloud-based Threat Intelligence

Many antivirus solutions leverage cloud-based threat intelligence. When malware or its variants are detected on one device, anonymized data about the threat can be sent to a central database. This allows the antivirus to quickly adapt and protect other users, even against previously unseen variants.

5. Vendor-specific Challenges

While customized systems or forks like HarmonyOS might have unique architectures, malware targeting these systems often inherits Android characteristics. Leading antivirus providers, including Kaspersky, Norton, or Avast, have expertise in handling customized environments and can fine-tune their tools to detect threats targeting such ecosystems.

Limitations

  • If a malware variant exploits a zero-day vulnerability unique to a customized system or fork, antivirus software might initially miss it until the vulnerability is patched or threat signatures are updated.
  • Malware that uses sophisticated obfuscation or encryption techniques may evade detection temporarily.

Best Practices

To ensure optimal protection:

  • Keep the antivirus updated: This ensures the software can detect the latest malware signatures and behaviors.
  • Apply OS and app updates: Vendors like Huawei and Xiaomi regularly release patches for their customized systems.
  • Use reputable antivirus software like Kaspersky: Prefer solutions that explicitly support your system and offer features like real-time protection and cloud-based scanning.

In summary, as long as antivirus solutions are updated and employ advanced detection methods, they can detect and eliminate evolving malware variants, even on customized Android-based systems or HarmonyOS.
