I keep getting dialogue boxes pop up saying my network is not secure and would I like to use Kaspersky secure.

Recommended Posts

I recently got hacked by some one proporting to be a Kaspersky tech, I've got over that now and had a professional check all my security and wipe off any viruses, but I'm very wary of unusual things now happening to my computer. I used to pay annual fee to Kaspersky for Secure connection but I've not been using it for some time so I've not paid renewal. All of a sudden I keep getting dialogue boxes pop up saying my network is not secure and would I like to use Kaspersky secure. This never happened before the hacker got into my PC. Is this offer of connecting via another country and secure connection really from Kaspersky? Is it part of an update of Total Internet security package or a scam/hacker? It keeps saying my connection in my house is public and would I like to connect via security. I'm very suspicious. Should I be? Is offer of proxy type connection due to update of K Total Security adding an extra feature within the fee I paid for that programme?

Hello Bassett, Welcome! Kaspersky Total Security, comes with Kasperaky Secure Connection (Kaspersky's VPN) pre-installed. --- The following is general info about KSC: Kaspersky Secure Connection can also be purchased as standalone software. Kaspersky Secure Connection offers 200mb of free data daily, increases to 300mb, if you sign inot your MyKaspersky account. Buying a Kaspersky Secure Connection licence gives unlimited data. --- If Kaspersky Secure Connection is configured to start automatically & manage networks, at computer starup, as opposed to being started "manually", the network notifications you're reporting sound normal.
  1. Are you able to screenshots the popups/notifications and post back so we can see exactly please?
Thanks. Referece documentation (Kaspersky Secure Connection) https://help.kaspersky.com/KSDE/Win4.0/en-US/126993.htm KIS - https://help.kaspersky.com/KIS/2020/en-US/87342.htm

Hello Thank you for your reply but it doesn't really answer my question - I know you can buy Kaspersky security separately.. as I indicated in my first posting, I did have a subscription at one time. So I know it is a separate app you can pay for... only I have not paid for it this year. so seeing as I didn't buy a subscription this time my question is Why having had this year's Kaspersky Total security for at least six months, and never before offered a proxy connection OR only saying since I was hacked two weeks ago that my home network is **PUBLIC** and **Insecure** why is it suddenly coming up offering to connect me to the internet variously via Ireland or France? i.e. a proxy? If it is genuine Kaspersky feature, when was it added to Total Security? . Please can someone say ** when** it was added. NB It certainly was not available on my subscription in 2018 as it was always greyed out on the task bar, and not available first part of 2019 on my Total Security installation. Re Dialogue box: Its virtually impossible for me to show the only very recently appearing dialogue box saying my home network is a) Public b) insecure because its there only for the briefest minute and then its gone. So hope the description in my report will suffice. The only thing to add is, whereas it never did it before two weeks ago, and my hacking event, I'm now asked regularly by this flashing on and off box, do I want to connect to Ireland, or France or somewhere else after it has shown the dialogue box about my home network being PUBLIC... However my home network most certainly isn't public, its in a domestic home, not in a café, library or any other public place. So I'm mystified by it. Would like explanation please when it was added and why my domestic network which is passworded is public, and if it really is Kaspersky Total security doing this.

Hello Bassett, Thank you for posting back. When Kaspersky Secure Connection/VPN (prepackaged with KTS) first "appeared" on/in my computer I was very "surprised". I'd upgraded KTS, had no idea a VPN was included in the package and very annoyed that I was presented with something I had not expected. I considerd it to be bloatware. My position (at the time), was, during the install/upgrade process, it would be "polite" if Kaspersky asked me, "do you want to install/activate KSC/VPN"? Is it possible, when the good computer tech fixed your computer, he activated KSC/VPN? 1⃣ Can you go to the KSC/VPN, check the following:
  1. If any [ ] checkboxes are selected, uncheck.
[information] (if KSC/VPN) is active, the following screen may "possibly" be one of the reasons the popups are happening. 2⃣To eliminate KSC/VPN entirely:
  1. Go to Windows, Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center >> Change Adaptor Settings
  2. Look for device or devices called Kaspersky Security Data Escort - if it or they are enabled, disable.
  3. Uninstall Kaspersky Secure Connection - via Windows, Programs & Features, Uninstall or Change a Program.
  4. Reboot/power off/on PC
  1. Changing 1⃣ & 2⃣ should stop the notifications, if the same notifications continue, please contact Kaspersy Technical Support and let us know?
  2. The team will, almost certainly, ask for GSI & Windows logs, I've provided the help documentation at the end of my reply.
  3. I appreciate my reply does not answer your question: "are the popups genuine?" I can't answer, without seeing one of the notifications, & "when it was added?", again, I cannot answer, however, I'm sure both questions will be able to be answered by the Kaspersky Technical Support Team.
Please keep us updated? Best regards. https://support.kaspersky.com/common/diagnostics/3632#block7 https://support.kaspersky.com/

Three other things to check Bassett,
  1. From your active connection > Properties - is ?Public selected?
&
  1. Windows: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings - check and ensure each of these settings/profiles is set as you require:
& ?Allow remote access? - make sure this is NOT selected:
  1. Finally, 2 recent Kaspersky articles - specific to "remote" & "fake" support:
https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/dangerous-remote-access/27538/ https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/remote-access-scams/27552/ As before, please do keep us updated? Best regards

Hello Bassett, Does this image look like the notifications that are bothering you? 1⃣ & 2⃣ >> 3⃣
  1. These 3 popups, exist due to the main Kaspersky software, in this case Kaspersky Cloud Security, (Kaspersky Total Security works the same), "managing" your home network, categorising it as "public", recommending (I) enable protection & turn on Kaspersky Secure Connection/Vpn.
  2. To put your mind at ease, if your notifications match these, they are genuine Kaspersky notifications.
  3. Why they began after your horror fake Kaspersky Technical Support hack - I'm sorry, I really cannot say, however, I'm sure the real Kaspersky Technical Support team will do everything to answer the question.
  4. My previous posts (how to remediate) remain relevant.
Best regards.

Thanks Flood, that's a much more illuminating reply and I was interested to hear of your experience of suddenly like me being presented with VPN without explanation. So, Kaspersky if you read this, ***when you add major features to your programs, please let the customer know, and give us the option whether to install or not.

PS my "helpful" Kaspersky tech - turned out to be a hacker masquerading as a Kaspersky agent... so all Kaspersky users be very aware of this, and be very wary of anyone ringing back and saying they are a 2nd or 3rd level K tech, and wanting to remote session your computer. BE CAREFUL EVERYONE.

Hi Flood Thanks for your further explanations about things, but it raises several questions as well as confirming what I see. With regard to the print screen items you've shown, yes to 1, not sure about 2, yes to 3. if you turn off file share does that mean that OneDrive won't update when you type on computer 1 and want to view it on computer 2 or you take photos on your phone that it won't automatically upload them to OneDrive anymore and be available to view on computer 1? What about Printer share? Does that stop you using your printer from computer 1 via Bluetooth? or from your phone via Bluetooth? and if you turn off remote access does that mean that when you've genuinely contacted e.g. Microsoft directly and you need help that they can't remote control and sort out computer problems whilst this is ticked? (I've had occasions when parts of Windows stopped working and had helpful remote sessions from them or from the software house that makes my sheet music programme, so from time to time I would have to uncheck it in order to get help.)

Hello Bassett, The best way for you to confirm the OneDrive, Printershare, BlueTooth requirements is to test.
  1. Change the settings, test.
  2. Not working as you require, chage settings back.
I cannot replicate your environment, the tests I've done all work, but, my environment isn't your environment. --- Regarding MS-remote support, and configuring/deselecting "Remote Assistance", it is far better to have this unselected, when & if there is a need, for MS to remote to your device, they will easily step you thru enabling the option. At all other times, "Remote Assistance" should not be enabled by default. ---
  1. Note 1. Many tech support teams use other software to remote, so a verified TS, will send a link to activate access that does not use "Remote Assistance".
  2. Note 2. All verified TS will be working under a case reference, they should know the case reference and your real name without you telling them.
  3. Note 3. If anyone is remoted to your device, with your consent, before they start, they provide detailed schedule of what they will do, you watch absolutely everything, you always have full control, if anything is out of order or does not follow the schedule, unplug the internet conx.
Best regards.
