What is the correct way to add a folder and its subfolders (all files) to protected resources?

On the setting to add a protected resource, how do I correctly add a folder and its subfolders including all files in it? 
For example, My Folder and all files and subfolders in it:

C:\Users\User\My Folder\*
or this
C:\Users\User\My Folder\**\*

 

The documentations are different and not clear to me
