Kaspersky Safe Kids 23.0.0.418 (on Windows) and Fortnite

There seems to be some issues with Kaspersky Safe Kids 23.0.0.418 and Fortnite - Which both my kids play regularly. When launching the game it will hang and then leave me no choice but to restart the computer (can't even open task manager). Even when disabling Kaspersky Safe Kids this issue still persists. Only when I fully un-install the application does the game work again. I can replicate this by then installing Safe Kids again which will produce the crash on launch. I can only assume Safe Kids is trying to capture what is happening when the anti-cheat or the game itself is loading - I don't even have app monitoring on. I've dabbled with quite a few of the settings and still can't get it working.

I would like the peace of mind knowing safe kids is installed but at the moment it's unusable due to this fact (I can't even pause it - The program has to be totally un-installed) - I have tried a full re-install which doesn't help - I even did a fresh install of Windows 11 trying to cure the issues until I pinpointed it to Safe Kids.

Can you offer any advice? I'd be happy to grab logs if that's possible.

Hello @Asaviour

Welcome back!

Hi, I have 100% exactly the same issue - literally like I wrote the post 🙂
There was both Fortnite and KSK app update yesterday which I was sure would fix it, but it didn't.

Please raise this, as I don't want to switch away from KSK, but on the other hand sons need to play Fortnite.

By reading through the internet, there were mentiones that this can be connected to "Easy Anti-Cheat" rather than Fortnite, but the outcome for me is the same.

I did think there might be more people with the same issue! I also stumbled on the easy anti-cheat issues (which I re-installed). Full win11 re-install which was basically throwing the kitchen sink at it. I can replicate this across x3 different systems only when Safe Kids is installed.

I have raised a ticket with support and provided all the required logs so hopefully it's something we can resolve soon. I'll share the outcome here.

Also thanks @Flood and Flood's wife but I'm not in the US so not sure this would apply. Will keep you updated with what happens 😊👍

I had to come on to this chat and reply, because I have the exact same issue and thought I was going crazy lol.

Even after excluding epic, easy cheat, fortnite, nothing seemed to help, other than fully uninstalling the software. Which I found out After a full OS reinstall. This happens to Windows 10 and 11.

So yes, please if there's a fix let us know. I would like to keep using the software.

Hello, how long do you need to find a Solution?

Just as an update - The ticket I raised has been forwarded to their experts on the 3rd of October. So it's passed the initial sanity check and onto the next level of support.

I haven't tried re-installing yet - Does anyone know if there's been any further app updates? I expect I would see a return email when it's fixed, but you never know 😊

I just tried reinstalling KSK and it's exactly the same - nothing changed.

Hello, I have the same problem with Fortnite for about 3 weeks.  All other games still work (Battlefield serie, call of duty, GTA......”. No hardware or software changed. Fortnite starts, then it takes 30 seconds and the system is completely frozen. After 15 seconds you can still stop it with the task manager. After 30 seconds, only the power button helps.  Win 11 completely reinstalled. Then only KSK and Fornite installed. Same problem.

It only helps to shut down KSK before i start fornite. 20 sec later you can start KSK.

When i try to use the stop/pause for 30 min  in KSK context menu it still freeze. Only shutdown KSK for 20 sec prevent freezing of fortnite at startup    Pause KSK or shutdown KSK is not the same seems somethig is running in the background that prevent fornite to start

Yes it's still not working and no further updates from Kaspersky. Not great considering most kids who we want to protect with their product also want to play Fortnite..

Yeah, this is making the software we paid for completely useless for us. And it used to work properly, so how hard can it be to reverse the changes that broke it?!

It’s disappointing Safe Kids isn’t allowing Fortnite to run smoothly, especially when you’re trying to do the right thing by having extra protection in place. Hopefully, someone can shed some light on this or offer a solution, because the peace of mind that Safe Kids promises shouldn’t come at the cost of endless crashes and reboots.

This has brought so much pain for my kids. I just realized it's KSK because I had to reinstall Windows completely. Fortnite worked before KSK and it doesn't afterwards.  Get this fixed!!!!

We have the same issue with Fortnite game as everybody else in this Topic.

I reported it to the Support and provided the detailed logs and trace files, which Kaspersky Support required. Now we can only wait for a response and hopefully a solution. As Fortnite is one of the mostly played online games by children nowadays, I assume, that this issue will be visible for all Safe Kids users out there. Fingers crossed.

We have a bug 7973054 and our developers analyzing it now,

As a workaround, please follow the below steps:

1. Download and unpack the attached file.
disable_self_defense_Safe_Kids.zip

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode.
How to start a Windows PC in Safe Mode:
https://support.kaspersky.com/common/windows/493

3. Run disable_self_defense_Safe_Kids.reg to add changes to registry.

4. Restart Windows normally.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Have a great day!

Eric || Customer Support Representative

The file contained the following information and was a .reg update (disable_self_defense_Safe_kids.reg)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\KasperskyLab\KidSafe23.0\settings]
"EnableSelfProtection"=dword:00000000

You do this using regedit, that is built into Windows. You should close (right-click, Quit) Kaspersky Safe Kids before doing the steps below.

1. Press the Windows button and type regedit
2. You will be asked to allow the program to modify your PC - press Yes.
3. On the left, you will see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, open that folder.
4. You'll see SOFTWARE, open that folder.
5. You'll see Wow6432Node, open that folder.
6. You'll see KasperskyLab, open that folder.
7. You'll see KidSafe23.0, open that folder.
8. You'll see settings - select that.
9. On the right, you'll see EnableSelfProtection - double-click that.
10. Change the value to 0. Press OK.
11. Restart your PC.

Major issues with Fortnite and Kaspersky Kids here as well.

Devs- fix this or you're going to see refunds and bad reviews. Most kids play Fortnite, I didn't buy parental software to have to be fulltime tech support at my house.

I'm going to give this another week or two before I look for other parental control software. This is ridiculous.

For everyone blaming Kaspersky for this issue, it may not be their fault at all. I'm a software developer/IT specialist. The piece of software that is clashing with Kaspersky is the anti-cheat software that runs alongside Fortnite. It's entirely possible that they've updated the anti-cheat software and it's mistakenly seeing Kaspersky as malicious software. It may be that Kaspersky cannot fix the problem as the anti-cheat software is not under their control.

I canceled my sub, this isn't worth the headache. As a consumer, I expect a product to function. If Kaspersky devs can't communicate with the anti-cheat devs, that's their problem. I vote with my wallet. See ya, Kaspersky. Junk software.
