the Battlefield 1942 gamespy patch is only used to replace the original bf1942.exe with a new one that introduces numerous fixes. It fixes the server issue with gamespy by redirecting the master server to a new server. It fixes Windows 10 no longer having safedisc DRM you don't require a CD anymore. It fixes resolution problems the executable allows you to set any resolution. The scan results from virustotal were zero viruses so it's a false positive the patch has been used for so many years already it was originally manufactured in 2014.
