Two profiles for my kid on one PC ?!

Recommended Posts

I’m using “Kaspersky Safe Kids” (in combination with Microsoft family...) to protect and control my kid, who is using his own PC with Windows 10 Pro.

He uses this PC both for playing and for studying.

I naturally try to set a hard limit for playing, but allow more time to use the PC for education.

And it looks like neither “Kaspersky Safe Kids” nor “Microsoft family” can separate these times effectively:

  • Some “Game overlay(s)” are active even when the kid is not actually playing. So time for games ends even without start.
  • Time is ticking even when the PC sleeps
  • I cannot set different/separate “screen times” for games and for education.

So I came to the idea to create two Windows user accounts for my single kid on the same PC. Each account - for different purposes, with different restrictions / allowed apps…

Q1. Does Kaspersky company or the Community have any recommendations / instructions / successful examples of such configuration?

Q2. What’s about licence in this case, can I still tell that I’m using it for one kid?

Hello  @yvolk.

Welcome!

Please let me know:

  1. Child age?
  2. Is the KSK “generic age” template configured?
  3. Win10 OS version?
  4. Kaspersky Safe Kids version?
  5. KSK - which controls are configured?
  6. Are any applications granted “permission” outside of the KSK & or  MS limitations?
  7. Microsoft family - which controls are configured?
  8. Play - “hard time limit” - MS or KSK or both?
  9. Is Education, additional time, configured in MS or KSK or both?
  10. Game  overlay(s) examples?
  11. May I have images of all KSK configured settings please?
  12. May I have images of all MS configured settings please?
  13. Re the License question, please provide more detail?

Please post back?

Thank you🙏

@FLOOD Thank you for asking :-)
The child is twelve, I installed and configured everything about a year ago and since that time didn't change anything at PC side except for installation of the new software, including games, to the PC using my Admin account.

KSK version 1.0.4.304 as I see in Windows "Add and remove programs" section. No version info and no way to check for updated on the UI...

Windows v. 10.0.18362

I had set in KSK default profile that corresponds to the child's age. I didn't know and don't know now exact list of applications. Moreover, as I see, some applications, launched via Chrome browser (and maybe via Origin / Steam game sites also) aren't distinguishable. But actually I don't care, what exactly game my kid is playing as long as it fits to his age. For me it's enough to categorize his actions as "playing a game".

Here is an example screenshot showing that from the KSK point of view all these apps were used almost the same time: the whole time, when my kid was logged in (or PC was turned on...), And it shows “overlay” app also...)

(Web UI bug of "Kids" section: it shows me UI in Russian and cannot be switched although all other sections are shown in English, as I configured (and this is default language for Chrome browser and for Windows...)

I had set time restrictions both in KSK and MS Family because Kaspersky Safe Kids is not flexible enough: in doesn't allow to set BOTH allowed time period AND maximum daily screen time: only one of two (Am I the first one telling about this?)

And as you see for me even this is not enough: I need separate time limits for Games and for Education. Currently I don’t have this separation at all: this is only my concept (I’m a software dev for many years BTW...)

I don't have any special setting, so no need for additional screenshots: they will only divert us from the main topic, I think :-)

@FLOOD And about my “License” question: actually I want to know, if configuring the second “Kid” on the same PC will fit into my “1 user” subscription license (This should be clarified somewhere but I couldn’t find such info...)

Hello@yvolk,

You’re very welcome! Thank you for replying and providing detailed information🙏.

  • I will review everything to see the best way to proceed.
  • I’ve been thinking about the issue since you first posted, one thing that came to mind is, to manage two Windows KSK Child profiles, the child would need to “switch” between profiles, for example, Child A allowed to use the computer between 8am and midday, and Child B allowed to use the computer between 16:00 and 18:00🤔
  • Regarding both allowed time and maximum daily screen time - this is a known issue, in hand with KSK developers, no ETA🤐 .
  • Regarding the KSK version, if you hover the mouse over the tiny KSK icon on the Windows Taskbar, a popup shows the full version and patch number. alternatively, again, tiny KSK icon on the Taskbar, right click the KSK icon, select About, the version & patch number are displayed:

  • Regarding configuring a second child on the PC, absolutely, one Kaspersky Safe Kids license includes one user account for one year (one account allows you to connect up to 500 devices for 100 children). This applies to Windows(PC) as multiple accounts/profiles can be configured via Windows.
  • Regarding the “Russian” UI, I take it your geographical location is not Russia?
  • If other browsers are use to access:

https://my.kaspersky.com/MyKids//Reports#/application, are KSK Application Reports always shown in Russian?

Please let me know?

Thank you.

@FLOOD Yes, agree, having its own Windows account/KSK profile for each purpose (Playing, Education) looks simple to configure without asking for new KSK of MS Family features :-)

Regarding Russian UI: I am located in Russia. On the https://my.kaspersky.com/dashboard#/ page I see everything in English, including “Globe icon + English” and “Kids” link-section name. But when click that “Kids” link, everything becomes in Russian and attempts to switch to English fail. In “Reports” section I also cannot switch to English. Weird.

Hello @yvolk,

Thank you for replying.

  • Re: the English/Russian UI, yes, seriously “weird”, can I ask you please to escalate this issue to Kaspersky Lab Technical Support, there must be a reason, not sure what it will be🤔 .
  • If you’re comfortable with having multiple Windows/KSK profiles (for the one child), do I need to work on this for you? I’m happy to do so, just not clear if you need me to?

Please let me know?

Thank you.

  • 2 months later...

Some follow ups after a couple of months using two Windows accounts (for Games and for Education) for one kid.

1. Windows fails to control “Time limit” on my kid’s “Game” account. I noticed this some time ago... I logged off/on, recreated/rejoined “family”, restarted everything. Still fails. So I had to configure KSK to restrict time limit. This means that now I cannot control schedule, unfortunately (as KSK still allows to set only one way of time control...)

2. KSK bug with inability to switch to English language still present. Just raised INC000011190331 for this bug… I thought _this_ forum should be monitored by them?!

3. Another KSK bug: After above change in KSK the strange thing happened: I noticed that in Settings (“Настройки”) time schedule EXPANDS !!! as kid spends more time in the account/on the PC. E.g. I set 1:30 hours day limit for all workdays. And suddenly (this week!) I see that for different days the limit have increased by different value: one, two, three hours… Fixed this two times already...

Hello @yvolk

Welcome back!

  • Re 2.

“ I thought _this_ forum should be monitored by them?!”, the KSK developers may “look” at the Community portal, however, they’re not able to address issues without data, quite simply they’d be run off their feet and hitting a big walls, if they tried to analyse every issue posted in the Community portal, without data.

When the KSK developers/experts provide the root cause for  INC000011190331, please share it in your post?

Re  MyKaspersky KSK inability to switch to English language, I have also observed this “bug”, I will post Kaspersky’s advice when it’s received. If you haven’t submitted a video, please do so, it will help Kaspersky Technical Team understand

  • Re 3.

Please escalate this specific issue to Kaspersky Technical Support. My advice, from experience with the Kaspersky Technical Support Team, keep the issues separate, they have an uncanny ability to get confused - easily!🤐

When the KSK developers/experts provide the root cause, please share it in your post?

  • Re 1.

What is “Game” account, can you provide me with more information so I fully understand?

KSK cannot control application time limits, is that what you’re trying to do? Please let me know so I fully understand this specific issue?

Please let me know?

Thank you🙏

Re controlling device use, atm, KSK is still only available as Block by schedule OR Block by daily usage, the option to use BOTH issue is still with the KSK developers, sometimes change happens quickly, at other times very slowly, however, the KSK developers are working on this

Regarding Russian language of the “Kids” site section I got this response from Support:

When changing the language, there is a restriction that says that some of the content may not be translated, so the website's behavior itself ('Store' and 'Kids' sections being in the language of the country of registration) is correct. In this case we suggest you to specify the English-speaking country you want to set as your account's one, and then you'll have the entire website presented in English.

This means that I have to ask Support to change my Country settings.

I decided not to do this as this looks like a hack with unknown consequences and not as a solution...

Hello  @yvolk,

Thank you for replying regarding “MyKaspersky account/KSK language revert” issue👌

The language switch happens with all languages, not only English/Russian🤔

I received a completely different Support response:

quote:

From: Kaspersky Lab Support, Sent: Tuesday, 21 January 2020 16:57

We have received an update that the language display issue is a known limitation

A requirement has been submitted to have a change implemented.

Please wait for our next update when it becomes available.

I will post back when the change has been applied successfully.

Thank you🙏

(From a message to KSK support)

It looks that I figured out major shortage / bug of Kaspersky Safe Kids: it fails to identify a User ("Kid") properly, when the User switches between Windows accounts (on one PC).
As you know, my kid has two accounts on a PC.I started with recreation of accounts:
1. Removed the kid from Microsoft family AND removed the "protected" PC from My Kaspersky i.e. from KSK also
(Restarted PC, here and below after each step)
2. Deleted two old accounts.
3. Added two new accounts as local accounts, with new names, that didn't exist before
4. Switched to Microsoft accounts (to emails)
5. Added both accounts to KSK

After all above KSK kept to show me that the PC was used by one account "kid" only

So I thought that maybe disabling account switch will help. I used this instruction https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-fast-user-switching-feature-windows-10

After this I started to see device usage report that looked closer to truth (need more time to confirm...)

Meanwhile I keep seeing (as before...) annoying and confusing notification from KSK: "Your child's device was blocked" (when maximum time per day is reached). It's confusing, because it comes several times per day, even on the next day about yesterday. Although logically this event could happen only once per day.
Please rethink this and make notifications easier to understand! (this is conceptual bug...)

 Hello @yvolk,

Welcome back!

Just to confirm:

  1. “3. Added two new accounts as local accounts, with new names, that didn't exist before”, these are 2 new Windows Standard accounts?
  2. If “yes”, 4 = Attached the 2 new Windows Standard Child accounts to Microsoft (email) accounts, is that correct?
  3. May I have images from MyKaspersky, Notifications, showing: "Your child's device was blocked" (when maximum time per day is reached). It comes several times per day, even on the next day about yesterday. Although logically this event could happen only once per day.” ?
  4. Have you gone back to Kaspersky Technical Support to update them?

Please let me know?

Thank you🙏

Hello @FLOOD

  1. “3. Added two new accounts as local accounts, with new names, that didn't exist before”, these are 2 new Windows Standard accounts?

Yes

  1. If “yes”, 4 = Attached the 2 new Windows Standard Child accounts to Microsoft (email) accounts, is that correct?

Without “Child” word…

In terms of Microsoft I changed how these two new accounts log in. After this change they started to log into Windows using their Microsoft accounts.

I didn’t add these account to my “Microsoft family” yet.

  1. May I have images from MyKaspersky, Notifications, showing: "Your child's device was blocked" (when maximum time per day is reached). It comes several times per day, even on the next day about yesterday. Although logically this event could happen only once per day.” ?

Please see attached.

I’m getting similar notifications by email (in English) - too many words and too few info :-(

  1. Have you gone back to Kaspersky Technical Support to update them?

Yes, I sent them almost exactly this message.

Please let me know?

Thank you🙏

Regarding another view on the day limit blocking, here is a graphical report for the same day, March 16 that clearly shows, when day limit was reached: this is ONE event at one time, not a lot of technical “blocked” events that confuse a User (“Parent”)

Hello @yvolk.

Thank you👌

  • May I have the KSK Summary 7day Report, attach📎 as a .txt file please? (or .csv, noting sometimes the Community Portal has a glitch & generates an error when .csv files are attached).
  • Note, without the data I’m unable to determine if the issue is one that’s already been escalated and is in hand with the Kaspersky KSK Development/Fix Team or if it’s separate🤔

Please post back?

Thank you🙏

No problem. I already reported this to Support.

For me the application's incorrect behavior is obvious. And it's easily reproducible without looking into logs.

Hello @yvolk

Thank you👌

I cannot reproduce the issue, hence the request for the Report. I’m also disadvantaged by not being able to read Russian.

The issue “appears” strikingly similar to another issue, I’m sure Support won’t mind trying to nut it out, however, in all likelihood, they won’t make the association as they tend to manage on a case by case basis.

I hope they provide a resolution for you.

Thank you🙏

  • 4 weeks later...

The bug with day limit blocking makes the KSK unusable.

I sent all requested trace reports and screenshots to Support team, and they - to developers. Bug number is 4140251.

Since that time I’m waiting for a fix. Hope it will be ready before my kid grows up :-)

As we continue to observe inability of the KSK app to limit daily usage of a PC, we had to return to the old reliable method: changing Windows password of the account so that only parents know it could log in...
