Hi – I run Windows 11 v 22H2 (OS Build 22621.3007) and have Kaspersky Free, application version 21.15.8.493(a)

I just detected a folder called self_files in a document-only folder. It was installed recently but not by me. Googling it, these seem to be files associated with PS3, Vita, Coreboot, or RPCS3 devices. The only game I play on this laptop is Microsoft Solitaire. It seems that sometimes these self_files are associated with malware. Kaspersky didn’t flag or delete them but it seems very fishy to me. Any thoughts?

Some points you can evaluate:

1. Review installed programs

2. Perform a full device scan

Spoiler
  • Open the Kaspersky graphical interface
  • On the left-hand side of the window, click → Security
  • In the "Scan" section, click → Choose scan
  • Under "Full scan", click → Run
  • Wait for the device to be fully scanned

3. Check the extensions installed in your browsers

4. Check for adware (Perform an auxiliary scan with AdwCleaner)

5. Clean up unnecessary and temporary files

Spoiler
  • Press Windows + R.
  • Type "cleanmgr" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
  • Choose the system drive (usually C:).
  • Wait for the tool to calculate the space.
  • Click on "Clean up system files".
  • Select the types of files to clean.
  • Click OK.
  • Confirm the cleanup.

If possible, give feedback on the results 👍
