Problems connecting to a Starbucks's public network. Mac OS.

Recommended Posts

Hello. I have a MacBook Pro with macOS Mojave and I've been having troubles when I want to connect to a Starbucks's public network. I think is because Karspersky is blocking the Pop up window connection. The first time, I tried deleting the network and connecting again but it wasn't works, so I had to leave. I uninstalled Kaspersky and I come back few days after and I could connect. But today I went to another Starbucks with Kaspersky installed and it happened again. I uninstalled the app and erased the cache but it didn't still working. What Can I do? I bought a licensece because I like the app but I don't like that I can't works in publics spaces like Starbucks.

Hello AngelDCI, Welcome! Please let us know:
  1. Kaspersky software version, build & patch?
  2. macOS Mojave - number?
  3. Is Kaspersky Secure Connection/VPN also installed and active - https://help.kaspersky.com/KIS4Mac/19.0/en.lproj/index.htm#kis120261.htm - when the issue is happening at Starbucks?
Are you able to replicate the issue:
  1. (At STARBUCKS), Turn ON Enable tracing
  2. REBOOT MAC
  3. REPLICATE the issue
  4. Screen print all alerts
  5. Turn tracing OFF- save the logs (they'll save as a .zip folder) to the desktop, upload to cloud storage of your choice, post back link please?
  6. Check Kaspersky [REPORTS], look for any events that match the timeframe you're at Starbucks replicating the issue, are there any events that match the issue? https://help.kaspersky.com/KIS4Mac/19.0/en.lproj/index.htm#kis59232.htm
  7. If "YES", export just those events to a text file, upload the file using the upload icon below.
  8. Also, please gather a system report and system log file - https://support.kaspersky.com/common/macos/14528 - please select the help documentation appropriate for the opsys version. Upload to cloud storage of your choice, post back link?
  9. Please create KL logs - https://support.kaspersky.com/common/macos/10909 Upload to cloud storage of your choice & post back the link please?
Note - the goal with the tracing (at STARBUCKS) is to have the traces running only as long as it's necessary to capture the events/data. The log files can get very big so the shorter time they are running the better & it's very important to follow the procedure: turn on tracing, reboot, replicate, turn off tracing... Many thanks!

Hello Flood Thank you for contact to me. Yesterday I uninstalled the karpersky internet security app and I installed again. Today I go back to the Starbucks with the app Secure Connection and I don't know if it's help but it's working, I got internet. Another difference it's that I go back with the web tracking unable. I will still checking because it's a problems that I notice many times, until now only and Starbucks and only with my Mac, my iPhone always get internet. Thank you for you help.

Hello AngelDCI, Thank you for replying and for providing an update. I'm glad the issue did not happen yesterday. Sometimes uninstalling/reinstalling software is all that's needed, however, as you say, the issue happens many times, so, finding out why and fixing the "why" is important. It's also very important to remember, public, unsecured wifi is a very unsafe environment: reading references below.
  1. "Web Tracking", is that "AntiBanner" or "Web-AntiVirus"?
  2. iPhone - is any Kaspersky software installed on the iPhone?
Checkpoint, status update:
  1. Uninstall/reinstall - Kaspersky - no issue.
  2. Web tracking - OFF - no issue.
  3. KSC/VPN active: no issue.
  4. Still testing, under review.
When you have time to test and collect the data please come back to us, we're only too happy to help. In the meantime, enjoy the Starbucks Coffee:smile:! *** https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/security-is-7/5244/ Сyberworld Survival Guide: Public WiFi https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/wi-fi-and-macs-avoiding-trouble/15110/ https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/do-you-use-free-wifi-hotspots-a-survey/471/ https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/public-ip-dangers/24745/ https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/dangerous-public-wi-fi/10774/ https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/preparing-your-waller-for-vacation/2390/ Best regards!
