Kaspersky VPN and Hotspot Shield

1. If I use Kaspersky VPN, what information is shared with Hotspot Shield?
2. What's the difference between using Kaspersky VPN, which rents servers from Hotspot Shield, and Hotspot Shield itself without Kaspersky VPN?

I have read various reviews from 2017 that say: "Hotspot Shield faces allegations of abusing VPN users’ data" and "Hotspot Shield accused of snooping on VPN users and selling data to advertisers" and "Hotspot Shield VPN accused of violating users' privacy". So these articles are kind of a warning sign for me and I don't know if the situation has changed.
