Kaspersky password manager icon

Recommended Posts

So this is about the password manager icon or I think the icon I’m seeing is that. When I installed the Kaspersky security cloud application I never saw it,  fast forward a few months when I went to sign into the app I use for email as I was typing in my password the key icon came up next to where I type in password and like shakes side to side and I was unsure as to why that came up. I haven’t set up the password manger and I don’t plan to. I don’t know if this has something to do with my subscription ending or trial really because I never paid for the Kaspersky application and its like reminding me to set up the password manger or something. it’s done this for about a two months which to me doesn’t really mean anything like if I haven’t set up the actual password manager there should be no entries for the passwords I used when the key icon came up, right?.

Hello @CastleVeim

Welcome!

▶ IF KPM has never been installed and configured, there will not be any passwords saved in a KPM vault◀

  1. Which Kaspersky Security Cloud Free (KSCF) version & patch(x) → on the Windows Taskbar, rightclick the Kaspersky icon, select About
  2. Is KSCF still installed?
  3. Which Mail application → name & version please?
  4. To enable us to check, post a full screen image of “ typing in my password the key icon came up next to where I type in password “ → hide any private information before posting the image please?

Please post back?

Thank you🙏

Hello Flood, I have Kaspersky Security Cloud-21.2.16.590(b) installed. Yes the free version is still installed. I use gmail for email. This is the icon that comes up literally just by typing one character when I go to type my password. Thanks.

Hello @CastleVeim

Thank you👌 !

  1. Those are definitely KPM icons🤔
  2. Is it a Gmail app installed on Windows 10 device, or Gmail accessed via browser
  3. When KSCF was installed, was the option to not install KPM selected?
  4. Did the issue pre-exist v21.2, Aug, 2020?
  • Gmail, accessed via Edge Chromium, KPM premium installed

Please let us know?

Thank you🙏

Hi Flood, yeah I could tell by the art style and colour of the key icon or whatever its actually called that it was a Kaspersky icon I just wasn’t sure if it was the KPM one but it obviously is I suppose. So I access gmail through google chrome so when I open a new tab gmail is pinned to the top left of the browser and I just click it and it goes to the normal select account page. From memory I installed Kaspersky Security Cloud in September of last year it may have been slightly earlier than that so maybe even late August. But I do remember that the key icon wasn’t always there when I signed into gmail, I believe the first time I saw it was maybe November of last year. when I installed the actual Kaspersky Security Cloud Free I do not actually remember whether or not I did select KPM but I think i did bc I have a desktop icon for it, I also have a desktop icon for the secure connection and for Kaspersky Security Cloud. I think if there was an option for it I would of selected it. I will attach screenshots

of the desktop icons and what the actual Kaspersky Security Cloud application looks like open if that helps. Thanks.

That other one formatted weird I think so this one has the screenshot of the desktop icons.

Hello @CastleVeim
Thank you for posting back, the additional information & the images👌

  • Your KSCF GUI image, shows KPM application icon in clear colors, if not installed, the KPM icon colours would be faded & a smaller faded blue download icon would also show.

Your KSCF GUI

Kaspersky GUI, KPM not installed

Decline KPM option, must be unchecked

  • Additionally, as you’ve advised, on your desktop, there's KPM shortcut, at some stage, whether consciously or not, the KPM application has been installed.
  • 2. KSCF does offer the option to NOT install KPM.
  • 3. KSCF does not offer the option to DECLINE KVPN →  why the discrepancy? Completely, absolutely no idea, the issue has been raised with Kaspersky on more than one occasion.

Please do the following steps carefully:

  • 🅰 Go to Windows Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features, search🔎Kaspersky → (a) take a full screen image & post back, (b) proceed with the following steps:
  1. Create a System restore point.
  2. IF KPM application is installed (point A above), uninstall KPM
  3. Run Windows in Safe Mode:
  4. (a) Delete all files in C:\Windows\Temp
  5. (b) Delete all files in C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Temp      Note USER = your name
  6. Return to Normal Mode
  7. Check the system for any Software conflicts
  8. Uninstall KSCF - do NOT tick any checkbox, leave ALL checkboxes blank
  9. Reboot, login.
  10. Download new KSCF.
  11. Start the install, during the install there is an option to install KPM, it's ticked by default, make sure you uncheck/remove the tick; there's also an option to participate in KSN, your choice, not mandatory.
  12. Allow the install to complete.
  13. Accept the Reboot now option.
  14. Login
  15. Make sure KSCF is started.
  16. Enter email address to join your MyKaspersky account & initialise the application.
  17. Do not check the Gmail/KPM key issue ATM
  18. Run a manual Database Update →  allow it to complete.
  19. Shutdown the computer, using Shutdown, not Restart, power on, login, make sure KSCF is started?
  20. Check patch(b) has been applied?
  21. Run a manual Full scan → allow it to complete.
  22. Check all Supported browsers, if there's a KPM extension, disable it: [a] Chrome: chrome://extensions/,  Edge Chromium: edge://extensions/, [c] Firefox: about:addons
  23. Exit all Supported browsers, restart each browser.
  24. Check Gmail/KPM icon issue?

Please let us know the outcome?

Thank you🙏

Hello Flood, I believe I have actually determined why the KPM icon comes up when I go to sign into gmail and I realised this when I saw your step 22 about extensions. So KSCF offers an extension called Kaspersky Protection, so before what I did is I opened gmail  and it goes to the typical select account page and I selected my account. The KPM icon came up in the same place right, so what I did is close the tab open a new tab but this time before I go into gmail I disabled the Kaspersky Protection extension. Now this time when I clicked gmail and selected my account the KPM icon did not appear. So at this point I handn’t actually tested to see whether this works if you close the browser then open it again, so I did that and the same thing happened as in when the extension is enabled the KPM icon shows and when the extension is disabled the KPM icon doesn’t show. I’ll attach a screenshot of the extension like I’m sure you probably already know what I’m taking about but I’ll just attach one anyway. What I think happened is originally when I got KSCF yeah I got KPM because as you said its ticked by default anyway, Kaspersky occasionally gives you notification type messages in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and one of them is something like ‘using google chrome enable Kaspersky Protection for better security online’ right something like that so I most likely would have seen this and obviously enabled it and then continued with normal web surfing. Couple days later I’d say I would have gone to sign into gmail and when I selected my account I would have seen the KPM icon BUT at that time I wouldn’t have realised it was appearing because of the fact that I enabled the extension. So yeah the steps you gave me I’m assuming would de something but seeing as disabling the Kaspersky Protection extension seems to have solved the issue I guess that sorts out everything. Screenshot of the extension I’m talking about is below. Thanks.
