Kaspersky never contacted me about the transfer to Ultra AV; and I am hosed.

Recommended Posts

Kaspersky, if I understand correctly was supposed to contact me about my transfer to Ultra AV by Sept. 29.  That has not happened.

Now I am not getting software updates and Microsoft in their infinite wisdom put me on the internet without me logging in and exposed me to the Internet after I discarded all the activity on my disks to make sure bad stuff was not getting in when they put me on the Internet when I didn't know I was automatically logged in.  Now I have to recover my disk to an my last backup which is about month old.  That means I am vulnerable to any malware that has been created anew within the last month.

WILL KASPERSKY KINDLY INFORM ULTRA AV OF MY ACCOUNT??!!   if I had not picked up on the fact that Kaspersky is no longer downloading virus updates, I would not be in this bad position.

I was able to install a trial version of Ultra AV so I am not completely hosed, but the situation is bad as I have a ton of work to do to get my computers into shape if they don't immediately initiate the automatic transfer....

I have always liked Kaspersky, it is going to be a shame if they let me down now as they have done so far in this instance.

Sincerely, John Sellers

(BTW way, I don't keep track of time, but I think I have been using Kaspersky about 20 years, and this is the first time they did not do well by me.... I am assuming it was Kaspersky's responsibility to do the automatic change over, as that is what Ultra AV has told me.  They said they could not help me until Kaspersky initiated the change over.)

@John Sellers The UltraAV software literally did not exist 3 months ago. If you are worried about having a quality AV product installed, pick one that has been tested, proven, trusted, and validated.... none of which is UltraAV. Look at independent testing from AV-Comparatives or AV-Test to help you make an informed decision.

Just because you haven't had AV updating for 2 days doesn't mean you automatically should restore from backup and lose a month of work.

@John Sellers,

Just to add to what @CLEsportsstated, there are reputable online scanners.  At Bleeping Computer, regardless of the AV solution that was on the computer, good or bad, most Malware Removal Specialists there normally ran an ESET online scan to pick up what the Farbar Recovery and Scan Tool (FRST) did not show us in its logs, that we would fix it using a FRST "fixlist" after it had run.

If you have any concerns about being possibly infected after a reputable online scan(s), you can have your computer checked there or at the Malwarebytes Forums by certified malware removal specialists.  There are dedicated malware removal forums on those sites that are entirely free.  We volunteer our time and expertise.

As @CLEsports has suggested, don't panic yet!  There might be absolutely no need to restore a month-old backup.  That said, a robust backup strategy is even more important than your choice of AV product.  No one product can protect a computer against all threats all of the time.

Based on my training at Bleeping Computer, and as a former certified Malware Response Instructor, I cannot recommend anyone use UltraAV.  I would not have it on my computer.  @CLEsportshas given you excellent advice.

Good luck, and have a great day.

Regards,
Phil

Unless you are in some sensitive line of job that deals with latest virus on daily basis, I wont freak out for 2 days behind update. I mean if you were actually affected, then loss has been done. You wont be able to prevent it from recovering from a snapshot. Secondly, unless you are running VMs, recovering from a snapshot in most cases wont remove your virus infection...
