[Invalid name of certificate] even when protection is turned off

ff.kis.v2.scr.kaspersky-labs.com still connects and kaspersky still blocks websites.  I think it is interfering with connecting through some captive wifi portals

Anyone have any idea why disabling isn’t working?

This is a warning not a blocking… since Kaspersky tries to scan https connections, You can try to add an Exclusion for that URL here:

I am using Kaspersky Antivirus, not total security.  I could not find similar settings as you show there.  Have you more insight into this?

@nunabiz, in Kaspersky Antivirus, this setting is located in the same place as in Total Security.

Settings → Additional → Network → Manage exclusions.
