Transferring backup files to different hard drive

I use Kaspersky in order to make backups onto an external hard drive, now I've gotten a new bigger hard drive on which I want to make backups. Just changing the backup location should be fine, but I would also like to have my old backups from my old hard drive on the new hard drive. So can I just directly copy this file onto the new hard drive and then select the new hard drive as the new location and it'll use that folder as the backup file and give me access to the older already existing backups?
