"Temporarily unavailable" warning when connecting to VPN in public places

Hi. I always get this warning when I'm at a coffee shop or elsewhere when I launch the app before connecting to a Wifi. After I connect, the warning persists a bit longer before the slider becomes interactable again so I can activate the VPN. So, the problem is VPN is off during this time. Does this compromise my privacy? I used a browser-based VPN before and didn't encounter this. If this is indeed something that should be implemented, maybe the team can work on this?

VPN without an internet connection is not possible , at startup you get a warning e.g. "No internet connection"

fair enough but the slider becomes interactable after some time passes following wifi connection.

can the vpn team do something so after i connect to a wifi, connection is halted temporarily until the app's slider bar becomes interactable? I can pm the name of the vpn that has similar capability.
