Kaspersky Security Cloud FREE: Is there a Ransomware Protection in it?

I just installed this software. First Kaspersky AV I ever installed in my PC. OS: Windows 10 Pro. So please pardon my ignorance.

I read somewhere in the website that Kaspersky Security Cloud FREE (KSCF) includes Ransomware Protection (RP). Am I mistaken? Because I couldn’t find anywhere in the software the setting for it.

From what I know from Windows Defender and another Security Suite, the respective AV would by default protect Documents folder and some others, and there’s usually a setting to add/remove folders from its protection as per User’s preference. I couldn’t find such setting in KSCF.

So my questions are:

  1. Is RP actually provided in KSCF?
  2. If there’s, is there a Setting for RP? Kindly please point out the Steps on how to find it in the software.
  3. If there isn’t, which (free) Kaspersky solutions for home that have one?
  4. I found this page in kaspersky site for downloading the RP tool. If in fact KSCF doesn’t have integrated RP in it, then I would only need to install this RP tool, right?

Looking forward to your response. Thank you!

2- No

3- All Kaspersky security products are protecting you against Ransomware

4- Please always avoid multiple protection layers.

Hello Wibie

Furthering Berny’s comment. Defender would automatically be switched off when Security Cloud Free is running. Your real-time protection (including ransomware protection) would solely come from Security Cloud. You can if you wish let Defender run its own periodic scans.

In Security Cloud I would suggest setting up a daily Quick Scan and a weekly or monthly full scan.

FYI ransomware protection is an area where Kaspersky Security Cloud is highly respected and unlike Windows Defender does not require you to set up ‘Protected’ folders. No adjustments are required as ransomware protection, is active by default and why the separate RP tool is not required and shouldn’t be installed.

The link provided (https://www.kaspersky.com/free-cloud-antivirus) doesn’t work anymore. It automatically redirects to the home page. I wonder if there’s another official page still available stating that our free version includes ransomware protection. It’s not that I don’t trust you guys but if something goes wrong I don’t want to have only to refer to this thread to say that “I was supposed to have the protection”. Thanks so much!

Hello @6dB3Fd

Welcome!

  1. Some Regions/locations do not have Kaspersky® Security Cloud → may we know your location please?

Our test of the link Kaspersky® Security Cloud – Free, works without any issues:

Thank you @Flood and Flood's wife for those photos! Indeed I am in Canada so that is why I must have been redirected. The photo of the whole page is very helpful. Although the ransomware bit doesn’t appear in the table (which would have been the best because it would unambiguously include the free version), there is a tiny mention in an earlier paragraph:

Get what you need to fight off viruses, worms, Trojans, malware, ransomware and other hidden dangers.

I suppose we’ll have to do with that. The only reason I am generally wary is that often for marketing reasons software companies will promote features that actually are only for premium or pro versions and will not clearly signify that a free version doesn’t include it. Therefore users will take the free version thinking they have the feature, while they don’t.

We can’t really say here that it is unambiguous… Indeed it’s not stated clearly whether that feature applies to ALL products or just the paid products… If it was common sense that ransomware protection was included in most antiviruses that would be a non-issue; unfortunately, many other antivirus software require the paid version to access the ransomware protection. This is the only reason I am in doubt.

If only they had worded it as @Berny earlier on this thread then I would be satisfied:

All Kaspersky security products are protecting you against Ransomware

Well THAT would be unambiguous. I would only need to read that anywhere on Kaspersky’s official website to be in peace.

Hello @6dB3Fd

You’re most welcome☺ !

System Watcher can be enabled/disabled:

If the button is green, System Watcher collects and saves data on all events that occur in the operating system (such as modification of a file, modification of registry keys, startup of drivers, or attempts to shut down the computer). This data is used to track malicious and other activity of software (including ransomware) and to restore the operating system's condition as it had been before software appeared (to roll back the actions of the software). In some cases, activity of applications cannot be rolled back, for example when an application was detected by the Application Control component.

System Watcher collects data from various sources, including other components of Kaspersky Security Cloud. System Watcher analyzes application activity and provides other Kaspersky Security Cloud components with the collected information about events.

The Kaspersky Security Cloud package comparison table shows which features are available across the Family, Personal & Free versions.

Thank you🙏

OMG @Flood and Flood's wife! First of all, this table is awesome! I couldn’t find it before, but that’s exactly what I had been looking for! That said I would have NEVER guessed that the System Watcher thing is what includes the ransomware protection. So good thing you’ve informed me of this now I can even more fully appreciate the comparison table, which I’ve bookmarked (for my own reference and also to share with friends, family, etc.).

Second of all WOW you really nailed it with the System Watcher thing! This allowed me to go in my own settings and find the System Watcher section. And truth be told, it was there all along! I guess I just couldn’t read (or was looking for a specifically-named ransomware section). Here is the ultimate, most definitive proof for all future users that Kaspersky Security Cloud — Free includes ransomware protection (credit goes to @Flood and Flood's wife):

I hope this answer/thread can be helpful in the future and be referenced to new users asking the same question.

Hello @6dB3Fd

You’re most welcome☺ ; we’re delighted to be able to assist🤸 !

Another little tip, you may or may not know, in all Kaspersky home software applications, on most screens/windows, in the top right hand corner of each, there’s a ?, a ? = Help, selecting the ? will open a Kaspersky Help document relevant to the screen/window of the application.

Thank you🙏
