OS: WIndows 11

Kaspersky Standard Version: 21.18.5.438(a)

Earlier today I was trying to install OptiFine when I accidentally clicked on a download popup which downloaded a setup.exe file. Immediately after this I opened the file, thinking it was the OptiFine file and Kaspersky immediately alerted me that a Trojan file had been located and that it had deleted it. I have done a full scan and cleared my internet cache/history and restarted. I then did another scan. Both came back clear with no threats detected. I have changed my main password but after I saw the no threats detected message on both full scans I felt reassured. I just wanted to post this here to further put my mind at ease and see if there was any further steps I should take? I really am not particularly tech savvy so I might need extra guidance. Below are screenshots of the log Kaspersky made on the file deletion.

Thank you.

Hello @hamishp,

Welcome!

  • For someone who's:  "not particularly tech savvy"  - you've been extremely thorough & taken all the correct steps, well done!
  • Kaspersky deleted the trojan file & both scan results show 'no threats detected', (your) system is clear.
  • Check in Quarantine - IF the file is there (you) may wish to delete it; note, if it's in Quarantine - it's been managed by Kaspersky & is harmless unless it's restored - at which point Kaspersky will delete it again.
  1. (you) may wish to *update* Kaspersky Standard - it's currently up to v21.20, v21.18 is outdated.
  2. The link to update: https://www.kaspersky.com/downloads#update-product; read: How to update the application
  3. *AFTER* the update, run a Database update - allow it to complete.
  4. Then shutdown the computer using Shutdown, not Restart, when the computer is OFF - power on by pressing the power button, login.
  5. Check Kaspersky application for version & check the Reports for any potential issues - there really should not be any - based on what you've reported so far.

IF there's further concerns please do not hesitate to post back?
Thank you🙏

HI, thanks for your speedy reply.

I managed to find the file in the quarantine and was quick to delete it.

I have also updated my Kaspersky software (thanks for the heads-up, wouldn't have known to otherwise) did another scan after all your advice and it read safe so I am very relieved.

Thanks again so much and I'm just happy Kaspersky itself dealt with the malware so fantastically. My confidence in the software has only been bolstered after this.

Hello @hamishp

You're most welcome!

Kaspersky has a good track record & (your) conscientious actions were / are very appropriate for this type of event.

We're happy to read that (you) have confidence in the software.

Some golden rules; always keep Windows updated, ditto for Kaspersky; always backup all important data -> on a regular basis & it doesn't hurt to create System Restore points - also on a regular basis: How to create a restore point in Windows

Thank you🙏
