Total Security prevented me from installing Windows 10 version 1903

Recommended Posts

I wanted to make everyone aware that Kaspersky Total Security was preventing me from installing the latest version of Windows 10 (1903, the May 2019 update). I thought it was Battleye at first, but the only thing that allowed the installation to complete was the un-installation of KTS. I did manage to reinstall it after it was done.

Hello Windows_Tech_Support. Welcome! Thankyou for sharing. As you've posted as a question, not conversation, do you require assistance?
  1. If yes, please: please collect a GSI :- https://support.kaspersky.com/common/diagnostics/3632#block7, include Windows Logs, upload the full GSI.zip folder to a cloud storage of your choice, e.g., OneDrive, GoogleDrive, MegaDrive...
  2. Please post back the link?
Thanks!

Nope I have KTS and it never once prevented it. Are you sure that your not using any anti cheats for your games?

Thanks for the heads-up on this. KTS19(e) stopped my installation of Win 10 1903 as well! How do I know? At first attempt, the process failed. Therefore, i wondered whether kts self defense was the culprit, so unchecked self defense and disabled kts, but failed on that second attempt. Therefore, after reading your post, I uninstalled kts and you've guessed it, installed no problem. Therefore, looks like kts causes problems for some installations. S

Ok so what games do you have that use battleye or anything like that? The crew 2 has an anti cheat engine it. Its simple, remove the games that has these anti cheats, and then upgrade, then reinstall them. Thats how I ended up having to do it.

That may be the way you had to do it but games certainly had nothing to do with the problem i had, because I had nothing to do with games on my system; so it was something else causing my problem.

Ok so what is the error you get or message you get?
As stated, i had to remove kts completely to upgrade successfully. The first attempt failure gave no error code, simply saying upgrade failed. The second failed attempt gave a Windows error code, you know the type, e.g. 0x..... which never seems to have any meaning. The third attempt was successful after removing kts. So, rather than mess about trying to find the cause of a failure, just uninstall kts and reinstall it once done. That doesn't help kasp labs determine the cause of failed attempts of course but that's another story. S

Omg, so it's not just me?! I've been trying to contact Microsoft for 2 days now and I keep getting this error code: 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 Which means it's either something wrong with the drivers or the antirvirus, I'm pretty sure everything in my drivers is up to date, but I was suspecting it's this KTS! I really never was a fan of KTS, but when people suggested it, I wanted to see what the gest was about... and man do I regret it; because I've recently had my windows defender discovering a malware, that KTS did NOT!!!!!

In addition to the four or five recent posts located directly above this post, For the past 13 years, when there is a new operating system, or service pack, or major Windows 10 update, I either format C and then clean install Windows > update Windows > reboot >reboot, and then install Kaspersky, or I uninstall Kaspersky, do the major Windows update > reboot > reboot, then re install Kaspersky. I like to start off squeaky clean at least twice a year. Of course, Kaspersky Lab developers want to have many users who do in-place on-top upgrades for Windows and Kaspersky application to have a nice, smooth seamless upgrade and update experience. Please help the developers: If you have any issues, please contact Tech Support and please supply the logs that they need in order to have most all of many hardware and software configurations have a nice upgrade/update experience.

Also,

0xC1900101 that is the one that I had too, I had to remove the anti cheat software by removing my games that had this. (have 2 on my pc).

Hello ckitsoulis, Welcome! Is there a "business" reason to remain on such an old KTS version? May we have the logs with (0x80070005 - access denied) from the 3 devices? Please let us know? Thanks. ---- Martin Brinkman - a well known, knowledegable & impartial industry reviewer, always provides good reference reading: https://www.ghacks.net/2019/05/22/all-existing-issues-with-windows-10-version-1903-may-2019-update/

Hello ckitsoulis, Were all software compatability requirements checked for original 2018 install of Kaspersky software? Patch (l) is the latest update for 2018. ---- For specific analysis of any issue, logs are very helpful, otherwise all analysis, review is generic. the one pc - that I had manually upgraded to KTS 20 - completed successfully the upgrade the 2 other pcs - that I had uninstalled KTS - completed successfully the upgrade I re-installed KTS 20 and are working fine so, as far as I know, KTS 18 has a problem with 1903 Also, there should be an auto-upgrade to latest version for KTS THANKS the original poster for the solution

After completely uninstalling KTS (don't forget to save your settings first!) the upgrade from 1803 to 1903 went like a dream. Re-installed KTS and all is well. Hope that helps. Neil
Hi, Neilg The log you providered show the installation encounter a security information migration issue. It maybe lead to self-defense module of KTS or KTS process takes up the relevant registry key. Please try to disable self-defense module and exit KTS to upgrade OS. I think uninstalling KTS will make the system update more successful as you expect. Regards.

Kaspersky Internet Security prevented Windows from updating to 1903 'Access Denied' Similar strings to the above posted log in my log relating to Kaspersky You should fix this for future Windows feature updates so uninstalling Kaspersky won't be necessary to install Windows updates This took me over a week to find the cause Unacceptable.

Hello megabug7, Welcome!' Thanks for letting us know. Upgrading the operating system is significantly different to "updates". Standard best practice for major operating system upgrades is to (temporarily) configure av to not start at system start up, disable av and or uninstall anti-virus software before proceeding with the upgrade. & always have a system image, current restore point and backups of all critical data, before starting an operating system transition. Thank you and best regards:pray_tone3:

Kaspersky didn't require any deactivation, uninstalling etc with Windows Feature update 1809 I spent the whole week trying all sorts - including having exited Kaspersky during the Windows update and even tried it in Safe Mode - An anti-virus application should NEVER prevent / interfere with the operating system updates - END of Discussion I won't be renewing my subscription next year

What was the name of the malware detection that Windows Defender caught? If as you say Kaspersky didn't catch it, help the Kaspersky community out by submitting the malware sample to Kaspersky for analysis.
