  1. hello! sorry for the confusion, i actually made a mistake at the time of writing the post from a few days ago 😖 -- i have kaspersky free. as for safe torrent scanner, i have reasons to believe it was, in fact, distributing pop-up ads which has lead to attempts of malicious file downloads (although all of them were detected and blocked by kaspersky, luckily). and i felt iffy about installing any more programs to my computer at that point, which is why i settled for manually messing with the registry considering i knew exactly what to do. in any case, it is removed now, and i got the answer to my question (why kaspersky didn't detect it) so thank you!
  2. is kaspersky free or the kaspersky protection extension for google chrome meant to be able to detect adware extensions? i'm mostly asking this because, as it turns out, i've had an adware extension on my google chrome for probably a little over 6 months, and despite fully scanning my computer at least 7 times in that span of time, kaspersky has never detected any threats at all. the adware extension in question is called “safe torrent scanner” and it apparently comes with installing utorrent. obviously, i was not aware of it being installed on my chrome (despite having made sure i wasn't installing anything but utorrent) until i got an email from aliexpress suggesting me items corresponding to a google search i had done on the same day, which very much alarmed me. this extension is also a pain to remove, since i had to remove it from my computers registry in order to rid of it completely. is this extension simply not registered in kaspersky's database as adware, or does kaspersky free lack an option to scan browser extensions?
  3. thank you so much for the fast response! that sets my mind at ease a bit. but i do have to say, i am still curious as to why there was an attempted download from a site that was probably only listed in the google search results which i did not visit at all… does anyone have an answer to that?
  4. hello! today when i google searched “jackalope”, KIS detected a malicious object and blocked a download from svinews.com article related to jackalopes. i have not clicked on any links in the search at all, which is what left me confused the most and above all a little anxious. i tried googling the same thing again and the same thing happened, except now it also detected and blocked a download from webcache.googleusercontent.com search cache. this the information on the object: Event: Malicious object detected User type: Active user Application name: chrome.exe Application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application Component: Web Anti-Virus Result description: Detected Type: Trojan Name: HEUR:Trojan-PSW.Script.Generic Precision: Heuristic Analysis Threat level: High Object type: File Object path: https://svinews.com/the-story-of-the-jackalope-from-facts-to-fables MD5: 3CFD6A66C298901F1D7EF1338F790B4C Reason: Expert analysis Databases release date: Today, 30/07/2021 09:58:00 Event: Download denied User type: Active user Application name: chrome.exe Application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application Component: Web Anti-Virus Result description: Blocked Type: Trojan Name: HEUR:Trojan-PSW.Script.Generic Precision: Heuristic Analysis Threat level: High Object type: File Object path: https://svinews.com/the-story-of-the-jackalope-from-facts-to-fables MD5: 3CFD6A66C298901F1D7EF1338F790B4C Reason: Expert analysis Databases release date: Today, 30/07/2021 09:58:00 i am currently running a full scan on my computer and i will let you know if any malicious files are detected. can a google search download a virus to my computer like this? is this normal? should i be concerned (i am concerned) thank you in advance for your response!
