Blah's post in Backwards compatability of licenses was marked as the answer
For anyone running into a similar issue, the answer is no.
While KTS accepts the activation key for Plus, doing so will force KTS to automatically update to Plus without giving you a choice.
Existing settings/configs will carry over though.
