[Safe Kids for android] Does location tracking require cellular data? Currently only works when device is connected to WiFi.

Recommended Posts

My oldest son (10) just got his first phone. I've installed Safe Kids to track and monitor his usage. I'm happy with the web filtering and app blocking but location tracking only appears to work when he is connected to WiFi which is a problem. With this being his first phone we opted to only have talk & text service so no cellular data unless he is connected to WiFi. When I attempt to track his physical location I just get his last location that he was connected to WiFi and a message that says "unable to track device". This is a huge deal breaker as this is one of our biggest concerns as parents. I need the ability to quickly see exactly where he is located if needed. His location services on the device works perfectly fine with no cellular data so I'm not sure why this feature isn't working. I have given Safe Kids all permissions and his GPS is set to "high accuracy". Any tips or is this a known issue?

I believe it would require some form of data in order to communicate with Kaspersky and relay the position to you. It's the same as if you tried using GPS navigation without data. Unless you had offline capable GPS navigation then it would not work.

Hi @ZAM. Without internet data active it is impossible to send a remote request for GPS localization and, moreover, your son's smartphone is unable to send back data to the server.

Anyway, this is a nice suggestion for future versions, to use sms-commands to get the GPS position in case internet connection is not active on the child's phone. Please send this suggestion to the customer support here.

I have the same, but it is bad joke :-(.
I' am a child. I turn off data transmission.
And parents don't know where I am. This is very professional !!!

I'am a parent, now. But i can't control TURN OFF / ONN:
- WiFi
- Bluetooth
- Data connection
This is evidental bug in application.

I eventually gave up and just got him the cheapest data package we could, I think it gives him 2.5gb per month and only costs us like $5 more per month. It is still lame that it requires mobile data for location tracking. Before, when I first posted this thread his phone's GPS worked perfectly without any mobile data (i.e. Google maps).

Hmmm,

Connection data is only one step...
You have no control as parent:
- WiFi
- Data connection
- Airplane mode
Child always can Turn Off those options.
You can block "settings" but child always can usees upper beam.
My son knows perfectly haw can he do :-), how to avoid block.

Those problems I have reported to support. We can only wait...
