Kaspersky Password Manager 5.0: commercial release (build 5.0.0.147)

Recommended Posts

It appears that Kaspersky Password Manager 5.0 (build 5.0.0.147) has been released, as per the announcement above (http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=195482), and contains fixes more than new functionality (Internet Explorer lock-ups anyone?).

Now for the surprise.. it appears not to be a free upgrade, even for all the "lifetime licence" owners of KPM 4.0.0.133. If you download the upgrade from http://www.kaspersky.com/kpm-latest-versions your existing licence does not work.

I myself found this interesting, as the e-store page for product upgrades (http://usa.kaspersky.com/store/product-upgrades) says the following:

"As a Kaspersky Lab customer, you may upgrade to our latest version at no cost, as long as you have time remaining on your existing license."

mrsamuel;

I completely agree with you!

In my case, we purchased 3 licenses for KPM 4.x, 5 weeks ago. It worked for a few weeks, and then KPM locked up my IE8. After that, the software was useless and I had to uninstall KPM. One in the developer team sent me a PM and told me that I had to wait for the new KPM 5. This release would be released in a few weeks, and would probably solve my issue.

Then the KPM 5 was released and to my surprise, I could not use my newly purchased license! I have asked here on the forum, sent Kaspersky a mail and finally sent them a PM, without any answer at all.

I have 4 days remaining of my “trial”. If this isn’t resolved until my “trial” expires, I will uninstall the KPM. Come on Kaspersky; I have already have paid for software, you can’t expect me to purchase it again since the former version had a bug?

I work in the IT department in our company, and purchased 3 licenses for testing before implement the software to the employees. Needless to say, there will be no more Kaspersky SW at our company if this is the outcome.

Ole Martin

Danilka;

I have checked your link, and have one question:

I have already paid for the software, do Kaspersky expect me to purchase it again since the former version had a bug and couldn't be used?

Thanks and regards,

Ole Martin

The only part of those instructions I will be following is step 2.

I understand that development teams don't work for free but I bought 2 licenses of v4 expecting at some point there would be bug fixes and there weren't any. Now I can keep the buggy v4 that never worked right for me or I can pay again. Yet another bad marketing decision that is likely to lose some customers.

In summary... go for Pure... at least you´re going to be paying an anual subscription and will be entitled to all upgrades...

I was going to acquire a couple KPM, but Brazillian Store (always behind) is selling version 4.x.xxx and I will not get this version...

Maybe it´s a better idea for me to go for PURE (on the Global Store), once again, Brazillian Store is behind... lol! :)

Not a big issue to pay for KPM new version, but I think the msg next to the product (lifetime license) should be changed to something else, stating that the lifetime license is JUST for the version you acquire, not major upgrades (like v4.x to v5.x or v5.x to v6.x and so on)...

That will avoid confusing and some mad customers, price is not that high, but you kind feel frustrated thinking you bought a product for your all life, including upgrades and everything else, and no, instead you bought that version of the product for life... Just a simple text change in the KPM product page will avoid any missunderstands!

At least that´s my two cents!

Cheers,

Why not simply release a small patch for v4 which addresses major bugs/issues free of charge? If users want new v5 features like Chrome support and memos etc., then they should pay for the v5 upgrade if that's the new policy, but they shouldn't be cut short for a stable/bug free product for which they already paid for.

Hi dklord666!

It’s not the cost of the product that concerns me.

My concern is the fact that the latest v4 version suddenly doesn’t work and locks up IE8.

In this case, Kaspersky should have come with a fix for v4 that solve the issue for their customers. Instead, they release a new major version and demand their customers to pay again in order to get the product to function as intended. Where is the logic?

As in my case: purchased v4 five weeks ago, for 3 computers. After 3 weeks, 2 of the computers look up using KPM. After testing, it seems that V5 solves the issue. Well, as already said; it is not talk about the relative small cost, it is a question about principles.

EDIT: sorry, I quoted the wrong post...

Thanks and regards,

I would consider that fair though I wish they would have been clearer about the licensing of this product to begin with.

Like many others I was in touch with Support over the IE hang problem and took the product off to wait for the new version. I abandoned it when I found out the new version still wouldn't support 64bit browsers. Then I find I would have had to pay for it anyway. Good job some of the rival free products work fine. Doubt I'll come back now.

Yes. You can release a new version with new features and expect users to pay for a new licence (maybe at a reduced cost).

No. You cannot fail to fix bugs in a current version that users have paid for, and give "buy the new version" as the only solution.

FAO Kaspersky:

Lifetime Licence = Does not mean free upgrades to versions with NEW functionality.

It DOES mean bugs should be fixed for the existing version as long as users use it. Do not make the "bug vs new functionality" mistake.

Do not fail to notice that many users have only just purchased version 4, which was INOPERABLE from day one with Internet Explorer due to the freezing issue (I myself have not had a single days use from this purchase). It would be very poor customer service to not fix these issues in v4 and force people to buy v5.

Be assured that many customers continued business will hang on this...

I have been a Kaspersky user for several years and also recommended the software to many.

However, Kaspersky's decision to refuse KPM users ( including myself with 3 licences ) free access to the new version is big upset.

Whatever the interpretation some people may have, when you say permanent licence, it should usually include upgrades. Otherwise, we have to conclude that this was only a scam to lure customers into purchasing the software, which in my book is called fraud !

So, unless Kaspersky's narrow minded marketing gurus come up with an honest solution, I will not be renewing my KIS licence next august and will be throwing away the actual garbage version of KPM.

Pity !

Liberte50;

I totally agree with you!

I was promised that this issue should be taken care of, in a given timeframe. This timeframe is passed and I am finished with Kaspersky. The products are not bad, but the support is not worth mentioned at all. I have just uninstalled KPM and have ordered another product that suits my need.

Happy new year to all of you!

Thanks and regards,

Ole Martin

Hello again,

I took a look at the French user forum and noticed that 2 users say they got an upgrade offer to V. 5 at a discount price of 9,95 Euros ( roughly 14.00$ USD ), offer valid until Jan. 5.

IMHO, this is still unacceptable and the upgrade should be free. I maintain that Kaspersky simply misled its customers into purchasing V. 4 by identifying the licence as being permanent. Should people have known that the licence was only valid for the purchased version with no possible upgrades, I'm convinced that nobody would have bought the product in the first place.

Will someone at Kaspersky's finally wake up ?

I'm going for a refund request.

Hello again,

I just forwarded to Kaspersky Lab's support team a formal request for either reinstalling my free access to KPM product upgrades, or a refund of the software purchase price.

Will keep you posted.

I am not happy.

I actually had the version 5 ( downloaded from their site ) and decided to buy.

So I used the buy link in the program itself ( V5)

I did get an activation code ..... guess what ..... it only works on version 4........ :dash1:

no free upgrade

This is very misleading !!!!

I just asked for a refund !

I spent some time talking with support and the conclusion that we eventually reached was, I quote "..your code will not work on version 5 of KPM. You will need to reinstall version 4, version 5 has not been release in the US yet and is not supported."

This statement is, I guess, technically correct, as KMP version 5 is only available on the "Global" site, and not usa.kaspersky.com. Although this still leaves a really good question as to why the version 5 is available at all if there is no way to even buy a licence for it!?

I think the best thing to do is to hang tight and see what happens, and in the meantime to ensure everyone who wants to voice an opinion can do so on this thread.

Sorry my bad, I didn't see that the other day.

Anwyay, it's not available on the USA/Canada site, which is where I was getting support for.

marmaduke are you in the UK?

No, I live in Canada.

Nothing would of preventing me from buying the UK version, don't need support.

You should look at this...

http://support.kasperskyamericas.com/knowl...se-article/3026 ...............american site

Knowledge Base Article: Applies to Kaspersky Password Manager

Kaspersky Lab specialists always work on the products functionality, that's why, new versions for all Kaspersky Lab products are released regularly. If you want to upgrade to a new version of Kapersky Password Manager, perform the following actions:

* Download the product distributive from our official web site

* In the window that will open click the Save button.

* Run the downloaded file and follow the instructions of the Setup Wizard.

"from our official web site" click it and you goto http://www.kaspersky.com/productupdates the global site http://www.kaspersky.com/kpm-latest-versions where you get version 5... so I did.

AT the behest of us Kaspersky report,i was refunded what i spent and then i purchased version 5 from the global site and have had no problems since.I think from now on when i buy anything Kaspersky,i will buy through Global site. There seems to be way too much b.s. now which seems to be directed at squeezing extra money from the Kaspersky faithful.Pity.I would advise anyone when they purchase the software, purchase it through the global site.

Hi again,

Follow-up on my request to Kaspersky Lab USA-Canada support team : just got confirmation of full refund of the purchase price for KPM version 4, purchased a few months ago on Kaspersky Store.

Looks like offering an upgrade to version 5 is definitely not an option that they will consider, I don't understand why.

Anyway, at least Kaspersky's support people were honest enough to consider a refund.

Looking back at the whole process, seems to me that support teams are also victims of this whole mess due to Kaspersky's poor marketing practices, and now have to clean the mess. And that ain't over yet, with version 4 still on sale on some of Kaspersky's web sites.

Some butts need to be kicked at Kaspersky Lab's higher marketing / management levels.
