CD drive letters changing after reboot since installing KIS 2011

Recommended Posts

Since updating to KIS 2011 I have been having problems with my CD drive letters being changed every time I reboot. By using 'disk management' I correct them to 'R' and 'W' then reboot and the same thing happens.

The story goes.......

My operating system is XP. I had installed KIS 9.0.0.736 with no problems. I tried to install KIS 11.0.1.400 over the top but had problems installing so I then uninstalled KIS 9.0.0.736. Then reinstalled 11.0.1.400 and all seemed ok at first, until I noticed my CD drive letters being changed back to the next available letters every time I rebooted.

I have tried using XPs restore point to an earlier date, but this comes up with errors and will not allow me to roll back.

I have used Kaspersky removal tool 1.0.162.0 and with no KIS on the PC all is fine. Then tried installing KIS 11.0.2.556 and the problem is back again.

Any advise to this annoying problem would be most apprieciated!

Thanks,

Dave.

"The MagicTuneEngine service terminated unexpectedly" appears a bunch of times as well as CD ROM drive errors.

Is the MagicTune software listed as Trusted in your Application Control?

Further investigation tonight....

I uninstalled KIS 11.0.2.556 reboot etc. Reset drive letters and all is fine every time I reboot.

I then reinstalled KIS 9.0.0.736 which I had no problem with before I tried updating KIS (as first post).

Then reboot, but my drive letters now change even with this version now.

So.....

I tried reloading my most recent Norton ghost image of my PC (19-5-09). Then uninstalled KIS, then reinstalled KIS 11.0.2.556 reboot etc and all is fine!

There is not much difference between the ghost copy and current setup as far as drivers and software go.

So my non technical verdict is possibly when I tried to install over the top this has mucked something up somewhere, which doesn't get sorted by uninstalling the correct way now and then reinstalling. Is this possible?

Yes MagicTune is listed as Trusted.

That reminds me I was going to uninstall it as I knew it doesn't shut down correctly when I shut down the PC. It turned out after installing it (came with samsung monitor) my video card wasn't supported by it anyway.

Can you post a screenshot of the restricted and blocked(if any) applications list.

How to take and post screenshot: PrtSc (Print screen) key (upper right part of keyboard)> open Paint (Start > All programs > Accessories) > Edit > Paste, File > Save as (jpeg or

png, Not bmp). When replying, Browse > click once to select file > Open > Upload > add reply.

My operating system is XP.

I recall having this problem with drives (and USB ports) renaming to other letters several years ago on my XP system as it entered old age (7 years!), and it was running another security suite (Norton).

As I recall the letters would "increase" (e.g. from D to E, from F to G, etc) each time I rebooted.

I don't recall the exact fix (but I do recall a tech support encounter with Dell that resolved it), and I ended up retiring the system soon thereafter.

But I have a feeling this is a Windows issue, not a KIS issue per se.

There may be something about it at a WindowsXP forum, a MS forum or at bleepingcomputer?

Is this an older system -- perhaps with a mobo going bad or a hard drive in need of a nuke/pave?

Just a thought,

The PC is two years old. My non technical theory after my experiments tonight (see post 6) is something possibly has gone a stray as you say with XP when not removing Kerspersky first before reinstalling. As when uninstalling KIS and reinstalling KIS on my old ghost from last year all seems ok.

I may just go back to this ghost and update as necessary and fingers crossed!

It should be ok to move all 3 to trusted, but maybe not the issue with drive letters changing. You can move to trusted by right click > move to group > trusted > ok for all open windows.
