After more thourough reading of the docs, I see that realtime maximum protection is not the same as on demand maximum. Under realtime, it specifically excludes mail archives and non-self-extracting zips.

 

This is hard to believe. But true. So, malware can do whatever it wants, as long as it keeps the files it reads and writes, zipped.

If the malware is zipped, it can not infect. The moment the zip is extracted, KAV will kick in to alert you and disinfect / delete the threat.

The moment malware reads /writes to zipped files, the files are opened, so KAV would scan them.
