  1. To be honest, if I only wanted an AV, I would go back to Nod 32. BUT, I was growing tired of dealing w/ various software firewalls (compatiability issues) so I decided to go w/ KIS. Other than issues when upgrading versions, KIS has seemingly worked fine for me......
  2. Had to buy a new license to upgrade since the installer wouldn't recognize my old key (long story, won't bore you w/ it)... Anyway, I had to download & install 303, then uninstall that to install 411. Now, I keep getting prompted to update signatures (current ones dated 11/1/06 according to the GUI). When I try to update, it hangs at 5%, then the screen disappears & I am prompted to restart, which I've done 6 times in the past hour or so. I still can't get updated signatures & I'm feeling a bit vulnerable. Why deliver an installer w/ such old signatures anyway? Can anyone advise how I can update signatures? Thanks...
  3. I agree w/ Don--turn off automatic updates. The ONLY things I let auto-update are KIS & BoClean. I just don't trust MS......
  4. Thnaks Micha...nice to know it wasn't something wrong w/ my install...cheers!!
  5. I've tried manually updating since 7:00 pm local time (the signatures I have show as being released today--July 26--at 12:56 pm)....Just not used to seeing such a long time during the week w/out an update...
  6. Ugh... Bye, bye Winternals/Sysinternals.....it was nice knowing thee.....
  7. I've been using TI for a couple of years (currently using version 8 bld 937). My suggestion if you go the TI route: once you find a build that works, STICK WITH IT, do NOT feel the need to go upgrading willy-nilly. TI is great, but can also be frustrating at times depending upon your config. Visit the Acronis support forum at WildersSecurity if you have issues....
  8. Yep, SpywareBlaster is great, even though I rarely use IE (at home) anymore. In addition I use KIS, BoClean (resident), Ewido (on-demand) & MVPS Hosts.. That's it for me, no need for anymore as far as I'm concerned...
  9. @ Don: Just wanted to report that I tried everything short of a reformat, and the gui still didn't appear. Then, a couple days ago, I tried a simple uninstall of KIS via Add/Remove Programs (I only kept registration info; and I did NOT use the KAV/KIS uninstall utility). I simply re-installed KIS, and evrything seems to be working fine. I haven't even had any issues in Explorer (knock on wood). Weird. Anyway, thanks for your help & advice....
  10. Is there a way I can see what hotfix I have through the settings (e.g. by right clicking on the system tray icon)? I still can't open the KIS GUI (I posted about that problem here--> http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=16615&hl= ). I ran the system file check as Don suggested, but I still can't open the GUI; thus I can't see the panel which shows which version of signatures & hotfixes I have...
  11. Tried another uninstall/re-install for the heck of it...still can't view the GUI. After my first attempt of doings this, a past problem I've experienced since installing KIS 6 popped up--this time I wrote down the error messages. From time to time, Explorer will crash. Typically it has happened when I try to right click a file for example to move it.; it's also happened when I double-click on a file to open it (can be any type of file--.txt, .doc, .png, .jpg, etc....). The first error I get says: "A call to an OS function failed" If I click the close dialog button & then re-attempt a right click, I get a 2nd error saying: "System Error Code 14007. The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context." I Googled for this error code but didn't find anything helpful... I must stress that these Explorer issues have been prsent well before my current issue w/ not being able to view the GUI, and I NEVER had this happen prior to installing KIS 6. I'm not trying to bait anyone, just stating the facts. It didn't happen constantly, but it did happen probably at least 3 times a week. Anyway, just wanted to get on "the record" so to speak what errors I've been getting as I mentioned the Explorer issues in another thread w/out giving the content of the error messages... Now onto seeing if I can get this GUI issue fixed... I have no clue what to try next...
  12. I did the uninstall/re-install routine, and still the same. I can't view the GUI...same behavior as before--a taskbar button appears, but I can't get it to show on my desktop. I am racking my brain to think what might have changed on my machine (other than a new wallpaper & a new theme). I can't think of anything... I am running the reatil version of KIS 6--I'm not sure if the update after re-install went well since I can't open the GUI!!!Ugh, I really don't want to do it, but my license for Nod32 still has a couple more months on it... Guess I shouldn't have purchased the "cheap" KPSS 5 license from Newegg; maybe that's it!! (just kidding)
  13. I don't recall anyone posting this issue; if someone did , I apologize... When I try to open the KIS GUI (e.g. by clicking on the system tray icon), the GUI does NOT appear... a button for KIS shows up on my taskbar, indicating I have opened it it, but it doesn't show up on my desktop. If I try to left click on the taskbar button, nothing happens. If I right-click on it, the only options available are "Minimize" & "Close"... Clicking on "Minimize" of course does nothing (b/c it IS already minimized); clicking on "Close" DOES work. I did updates Windows (XP Pro SP2) on Patch Tuesday, but this specific issue (there are more, unfortunately) didn't start until last night. Nothing has changed on my machine, by my hand, since updating XP. Anyone have any ideas, or am I basically stuck w/ the option of uninstalling?
  14. I keep seeing references to the "trusted zone", exactly what & where is it? The only trusted zone I see (in KIS) is for allowing network access... I'm confused where I can command KIS to allow all activity for any .exe.....
  15. I've been experiencing similar problems (w/ KIS 6.300). I get random issues in Explorer; i.e., not being able to open documents (not only Office, but even Notepad .txt files). There have even been times I get an error dialog ( I can't remember the exact verbiage, but it said something about "no call" or something like that). Like I said, it's been random. I can't prove it's related to KIS, but I know I've been experieincing weird annoyances that I never had before installing the retail release of KIS.... I won't make empty threats of "leaving KL products"; I genuinely want things to work. Anyway, I'll try to re-create some of my issues & take notes/screenshots. Liek I said, there have been various weird issues, some of which don't lend themselves to screen shots (visual evidence).... I wonder if a clean uninstall/re-install would matter (I'd hate to do that since I had issues w/ getting this installed properly the first time (using a purchased KPSS 5.0 key)... Sorry for the long post.
