KAV reports that threat signatures are out-of-date, says Update now; I hit the 'Update now' link; message comes back
"Update controlled by Administrator"; doesn't update. I am logged in as Administrator. Any ideas?

I think you didn't installed the local update task your server pc.
in that case create a group task for servers in group task section.
