I would like to turn off balloons & sounds for e-mail viruses, while keeping them on for all other alert conditions. The problem is this: I handle the default e-mail account for my company. Sometimes, there is a rash of virus-infected mail which arrives in my Outlook folder for "defaultaccount@mydomain.com". I"m perfectly happy to have those items silently quarrantined. However, if I were to open a an infected file from a website, or even more importantly, from a network drive, I would absolutely wish to know on-the-spot.

At present, I have kept the alarms on. However, there are days when I am interrupted by DOZENS of screeches -- for example, if a worm on some third party"s system sends thousands of infected messages and signs them with random names from my domain, then I will get dozens of bounces which include the infected attachment.

What do you recommend?

And, btw, is there a way to choose a less startling sound for the alert?

To disable certain alerts, including sound for any or all alerts, open up your kaspersky application. Click on the settings button in the upper-right of the screen. Click on the "Service" heading in the left column. Under "Interaction with User" click the advanced button. Here you can select what you want to be alerted about, either by pop-up balloon, or the tortured pig sound. These options are generally in the same place in the admin kit if you want to modify your policy for all machines.

If you don't want to disable the sound completely, the easiest way to change it is to replace the file with a different one of the same name. The location of the file would be something like C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations\Skin\sounds\infected.wav . Just pick what you'd like the sound to be, rename that file to infected.wav, and overlay it with the existing one.

I am running KAV 7.0. There is no "Interaction with User" option on the "Service" heading. However, there is an "Events Notification | Advanced" button on the Appearance dialog.

That brings up a list where there is a single entry for "Detection of viruses, worms, Trojans, hack tools". My understanding is that if I turn that off, won't be notified even if I open an infected file on my own PC or a network drive. If I leave it on, I will continue to get notified every time an e-mail arrives with an infected attachment. Am I missing something here?

So you're running the home version, then? The latest business version is 6.0.3.837.

If that's the case, I can't help you as I'm not familiar with the home versions. Perhaps try the home user section of the forum?
