Full Version: Running KAV in virtual machine on Windows Server 2008

Hi!

We have a serious problem when trying to run KAV 6.0.3.837 in a virtual machine on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V.
The virtual machine is also running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition as well as MS SQL Server 2005.
Are there any known issues with this setup running in a virtualized environment? and if so, are there any workarounds?

Hi,

You may install KAV for Windows Server Enterprise Edition for this kind of configuration, see:

http://www.kaspersky.com/anti-virus_window...rver_enterprise
http://support.kaspersky.com/win_serv_ee

Also it's not announced as compatible with MS Windows 2008, but I think it's currently in progress. Developpers may inform you better wink.gif

We have tested KAV for file server on Server 2008 running on real hardware without problems. It is when we run on the same software but in a virtual machine. The service is apparently working fine but in the background it spawns avp32.exe processes continually. Eventually the server is bogged down.

About known issue in virtualized environment, as far as I know there isn't but on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 it is hard to say as this Operating System is not public for the moment.

Are you sure about the name of the process ? It should be "avp.exe" not "avp32.exe"

Also how many processors are defined on this Virtual Machine ? If I remember, you should have 1 process avp.exe by physical processor + 1 process avp.exe to manage load balancing. You can try to set manually the number of process in the settings of the product (Protection > Multi-CPU configuration > Details...)

Finally, is it a performance issue ?

Sorry, in Task Manager it lists the processes as "avp.exe *32". I guess it indicates that the process is executing 32-bit code.

I have defined two cores for this machine.

It quickly becomes a performance issue since the increasing amount of avp.exe processes eats both memory and cpu.

None of our products support W8K Server, upcoming KAV FS EE MP1 will support this system – we are planning to release this product in 2-3 weeks.

I know. Still, we need it now and seeing that it works just fine on real hardware what could be the problem when running in a virtual machine. From the software perspective it should not see the difference.

You can test it in real word, but it´s not certified at the moment. I expect the upcoming KAV FS EE MP1.
I have install W2k8 Enterprise Server x64, but I don´t test yet Kaspersky file server.
