Full Version: Personal Security Suite / Autopatcher XP problem

I am using Personal Security Suite v1.1.53 and I was trying to
execute AutoPatcher XP (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89)
but AutoPatcher XP was hanging all the time. I tried to disable Kaspersky but it
didn't help, eventually I uninstalled the PSS and installed the Kaspersky Anti-Virus
Trail version but still no luck. (I also tested it on 2 different kind of hardware)

Once I uninstalled all the Kaspersky products from my system the problem was gone...

Any ideas ? blink.gif

Thank you.

Had you disabled the network protection (IDS)? Please have a look at this pinned topic .
captainpc
Thank you. I am gonna try it and post the results.
captainpc
Sorry, but my problems still exist...

The autopatcher xp starts working and then freezes on XP CRITIAL UPDATE (KB885626)
once again I tried to uninstall Personal Security and autopatcher works fine...
stem
Hi
I have never used autopatcher, but would of thought that this is just a downloader, possibly server.
Did you set rules for this pgm, to allow inbound/outbound connections?
captainpc
Autopatcher XP is a software that allows you to install Microsoft updates
without downloading the files from Microsfot servers.
it is a very good tool for an enviroment that doesn't have internet access or
a lab that's doing new computer installations on a daily basis.

All you need to do is download the update file, burn it onto a cd and run it
on any XP machines that has Service pack 2.

Once the Autopatcher XP file has been downloaded it doesn't need
to communicate in or out to the internet therfore the firewall settings got nothing to
do with that but thank you for trying to help. smile.gif

agree with captainpc
Smt tells me that your file is corrupted and is not because of KAV or KAH.
I installed all these updates manually without any problem.
captainpc
Nope... The file is not corrupted...

Once I am uninstalling KAV / KAH I have no problem executing the file...
(the same file... I am not downloading it again...)

I do have a felling that it's related to the way the this autopatcher EXE file
is compressed... but again... I tried execute the exact same file with NAV 2005
and NOD32 with no problems...

Hi
Have you removed these other AV completely from your system, before installing KAV?
Please read this

I will download this pgm myself, and take a look.
captainpc
Nope. I had no anti-virus before KAV, I took a fresh new XP installation, installed SP2, Install KAV and then tried to install the Autopatcher XP.
once that failed I uninstalled KAV and tested the rest of the Anti-viruses.

I do however have a ghosted image of the system with KAV so last night I opened
up the old image that had with no other Anti-virus on it besides of KAV and
did the testings...
All my testings are being done on a "clean" version of XP with SP2.

XP CRITIAL UPDATE (KB885626), This update you mentioned, that is freezing your PC, can you check this. This update was for a problem with rebooting while applying SP2.
Quote from Microsoft website full article here

QUOTE
If you have not installed Windows XP SP2, you can install the Critical Update for Windows XP (KB885626), and then install Windows XP SP2

QUOTE
This article describes how to resolve an issue where your computer stops responding (hangs) when you restart to complete the installation of Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. This issue occurs on a limited number of systems that use a version of basic input/output system (BIOS) that does not have production support for Intel Pentium 4 and Intel Celeron D processors based on the Prescott C-0 stepping.
captainpc
Thanks for all the info but the problem is not related only to that particular update.
I tired to installed that update seperatly and it worked fine.

I also tried to execute the same AutoPatcher on a different hardware and got the same problem. Once I uninstalled KAS problem was gone.

Sometimes it happens to face problems that are difficult to find out what cause them. My suggestion is to leave it and to install the updates separetly.

Its got me thinking, that if you are applying an update (KB885626) that only needs to be applied with boot problems while installing of SP2, which you allready have installed and do not need, what other updates are you trying to install, and are any of these trying to overwrite files being used by KAV?

(Have you tried to install with KAV real-time file protection off?)
captainpc
Yes, and I even tried to stop all KAV services but it still hangs...
I know that the XP UPDATES are not the problems... I think it's much deeper
then that and might be related to the way that the AUTOPATCHER XP is compressed
which concerns me becasue there might be some other products out there that using
the same method...

I am still trying to download this Pgm, the url you gave me- one link broken, and the other is downloading at 4kb - about 20hrs, (and I have a 10mb broadband.)
So will check the compression once downloaded, and see if I have any problems with installing the updates.

Missing KB887472,KB887742,KB894391,KB896727,KB898461

3 of the missing updates are in the "non critical" folder.

Now this is of course, from the installation on my system. It is allso important on the update order.
captainpc
Well... In my case I am trying to install them all..

Let's put a side for a sec the argument if I need them or not, The fact
is that when I am using KAV the AutoPatch XP will not work properly, when I am not
using any anti-virus or when I am using any other anti-virus other the KAV I have
no problem. If it was a problem with only one machine I wouldn't have cared that much but I am doing this kind of installations on a weekly basis and I do need to
install all the updates therfore it's a very critial issue for me.

There is something wrong with KAV and I really would like that one of the progarmmers will look into this problem when possible.

Thanks,
J.

Hi
Just ran the Autopatcher while KAV installed, and as you said, it frooze the pc. (No time to try and trace)
So I ran the Autopatcher while in safemode, and all updates installed O.K.
captainpc
Well.. In safe mode the KAV services are not running...
there is still somehing in KAV that causing it to freeze...
If I am doing some update remortly I can not run in safe mode..

Any chance that one of the programmers will investigate this problem ?
