Full Version: Outlook Express Timeout

Hi all, I've been using KAV for the last month or so and am encountering problems with POP3 timeouts when downloading mails with attachments. My config is as follows:

Windows XP SP2 fully patched;
ZoneAlarm Pro 6.5.737.000;
KAV 6.0.0.303 hotfix e;
No Anti-trojan, Anti-spam or Process/registry control;
Dantz Retrospect Express HD v1.0196

Prior to installing KAV, I was using NAV 2006, which I uninstalled using the Symantec tool on their website.

I only experience timeouts on OE (Error Number 0x800CCC19) when downloading mails with attachments. After much experimentation, I've narrowed the cause down to KAV through systematically shutting down ZoneAlarm and KAV. In summary, if KAV is running either with or without ZoneAlarm then I get the timeouts; if I shutdown KAV then whether or not ZoneAlarm is running I don't get timeouts with OE.

Also, I am experiencing issues with web pages failing to load intermittently, and sometimes loading with formatting problems present (e.g. just the raw text displayed), which I also believe is a KAV-induced problem, but due to its intermittent nature is difficult to confirm without leaving KAV shut down for some time.

KAV settings that may be relevant:

File, Mail and Web Anti-Virus: all enabled and on "Recommended" setting;
Application Activity Analyzer & Office Guard both enabled; Application Integrity Control and Registry Guard both disabled.

Any ideas, anyone?

TIA, Phil

Thanks for the response - but why should I suddenly get a problem with MTU size only while KAV is running? (assuming that was the gist of your suggestion?)
ibok
Regarding MTU size
Go here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283165
But for the rest .......
Maybe somebody more experienced than me could help you.

If you want to have an AV scan your emails then don't use OE. Use Eudora, Thunderbird, Seamonkey, etc. Microsoft says to never use an AV to scan OE. You asking for trouble and for corruption of the delicate OE store database.

As for that error, if you are getting it only on mail with attachments then you may have a piece of mail with a very large attachment that is "stuck". Use your ISP's webmail to view and then delete that particular email. If your ISP doesn't have webmail, there are free webmail services you can use or you can do it the old fashioned way and telnet into the email server into your account and find the stuck message that way. Also, corrupt mail (missing headers, etc) can cause this and must be deleted either through webmail, use of telnet to access your account, or calling your ISP and having them delete it.

You might have a corrupt pop3uidl file. You can try closing all programs and disconnecting from the internet and then deleting this file. Reconnect and repeat with a reboot before opening your email again.
ibok
Maybe you have right.
But all these years that i am using O.EXpress or Outlook 2000 Pro or Outlook 2003 Pro( English Version ) never had such a problem.
In the other hand with "Windows" you "never" know.

Hi Phil & welcome

I would wait until version 6.0.1.411 is released (hopefully) monday and then uninstall Kaspersky with a reboot and install 411, before doing more troubleshooting. smile.gif
st13phil
Hi Don,

Thanks, I'll give that a go. Hopefully the problem will disappear...

OK, did an uninstall of KAV 6.0.0.303, rebooted and then installed KAV 6.0.1.411 with no difficulties or problems. Except that it's made no difference whatsoever to this timeout problem...

BTW, just to clarify things: There is no problem with mail being "stuck" on my ISP's mail server and if I shut down KAV completely then all mail downloads just fine - with or without attachments.

Should I raise a case with Support, or does anyone have any ideas?

Hi st13phil,

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. I also am using 6.0.1.411 With XP Home SP2 with all updates and Zone Alarm 6.5.737

I thought I would try Kapersky to replace my Norton 2005 since Kaspersky is so highly rated on c-net.com. So far, with these problems downloading e-mail with OE and trouble with web pages loading, I'm not getting the greatest feeling about Kaspersky.

Apparently, ZoneAlarm is known to cause Outlook Express issues
I dont know if this will help but there are some workarounds at:

I will look at MTU size settings. But since the problem didn't start till I installed KAV 6.0.1, it sure makes it appear that it's a KAV problem. I did this work around, and it seems to have corrected the problem.
