I installed MP4 a couple weeks ago. All of a sudden it is taking forever to prepare a print job. Everything from getting the Print dialog up, to the actual sending of the job to the print spooler is very slow. For instance, after you click the "Print" button in the Print dialog, it just stays depressed and nothing seems to happen. It is taking as much as 30 seconds to actually process the job. And I am talking about simple jobs that usually take no measurable time, like a plain text email, or a one page pdf.
AFAIK there is nothing changed in the settings.
TIA

edit: the whole application that is printing is tied up during this time. i.e. if printing an opened email, Outlook is unresponsive until printing is complete.
Hello,
Try to add all files relating to the printing process (spoolsv.exe ...) in the trusted list of the trusted applications of KAV.
Does it help?
I have now measured (with Video for support!) a 3400% increase in the time taken for Flash professional to perform the same operation.
With KLIF.sys file disabled = 22 seconds
With KLIF.sys file enabled = 755 seconds
Excluding, closing AV etc have no effect on speed. This is an extreme example of a slowed application but it seems all registry access is slowed in the same way, more registry access more slowdown!
I had to print a 500 page mail merge from Word, too many times longer than it did with MP3 or NOD. You could count the individual pages going to the spooler, where previously they would all be spooled in a few seconds.

I added spoolsv.exe to the trusted apps and it seems to have helped, but still not great. What other files are "related to the printing process"?
Ricimer - are you saying that with AV turned off your system is faster, or is KLIF.sys some option or other application?

Slow printing is simply a side effect of massive slow down caused by the file system filter driver. Exclusions etc do not affect this as it is even present when the AV has been exited (no avp.exe processes).
The problem I had with flash was not related to printing but is an extreme example of the filter induced slowness of applications. File access doesn't seem to be the issue, registry access does. The more an application uses the registry for an operation the slower it will be.
Try to reinstall KAV without the NDIS driver:
- Remove KAV from the affected computer and reboot.
- In your administration console, in the properties of the installation package of KAV 6 WKS you have an option "Do not install NDIS5 driver" which should be available in the "Settings" tab somewhere.
- Deploy this modified package on your workstation
- Try to print again and check the printing time.

So, why would I want to disable KLIF.sys or NDIS? I'm not being sarcastic, I just don't understand the ramifications. I guess it's an extension of my frustration with the lack of documentation/direction of the Kaspersky package. There are about a trillion and two different options or combinations thereof, but what do they mean?
thanks -

You can't disable the filter driver, it disables most of KAV when you do. I only tried when I had ruled everything else out when trying to find the root cause of slowness.
The only solution is to go back to 6.0.3 until there is a fix for the broken driver. As it is a driver file it is always loaded even when files are not scanned or the AV is closed. You can tell it is still intercepting everything as it protects it's own registry keys from modification.
Currently it's very slow MP4 or back to MP3, no other choices.

If you disable the KLIF driver then the protection will be ineffective which is definitely not a good workaround whereas the NDIS filter can be disabled without any risks as network packets will still be intercepted and scanned but in an alternative way which can sometimes improve compatibility with network flow (like your printing process) so you should try.

Ok, thanks. I'll see what I can do with it.

I've noticed an improvement by reinstalling 6.04.1212 without the NDIS filter for an XP client (guinea pig).
