In the list of new features for Admin Kit 8.0, it say that you can now use Wake on LAN to turn on computers from different subnets. How is this being done? I thought Wake on LAN only worked with the same subnet because it uses Layer 2.

Does that Admin Kit work with the routers to do this? Do you need slave servers on those subnets?

That reference is a little bit confusing. It details "Administration Server and a client computer must be in the same Intranet (packets cannot be broadcast across the Internet)" but what to they mean by "Intranet"?

I have one core network which contains the servers and 16 VLANs that hold by clients and are all on thier own IP Address ranges. Does this work with VLANs and subnets? It did not work when I did inicial testing and this information will assist with identifying why it is not working.

Thanks for any assistance.

By "Intranet" they mean local network, in other words networks which are not separated by any devices like router or firewall.
WOL does not work with VLAN because the magic packets are stopped by the device managing your VLAN and this is not a restriction due to Administration Kit but to the WOL protocol.
The only way you can wake up computers I see for you is to have one Administration Server in each VLAN.

So is there a way to use the Wake On Lan part of the admin kit on another server within that VLAN to wake the computers and shut them back down without installing another Admin Kit? With all our computers within the one area I don't wish to have several Admin servers in use, but I could set up a script to run an *.exe and bring them to life

The only way I see is to deploy a tool like WOL.exe with the list of MAC address of all remote computers you want to wake up. This should be done with a deployment task that you have to run few minutes before your scan task start.

Shutting down computers at the end of the scan is not a problem, you just have to enable the option in the properties of the scan task.

I now have WOL running from another server to get some of the machines, but I found this interesting:-
http://support.kaspersky.com/ak8/tech?qid=208280830
which states "Wake On LAN setting is available for clients in subnets other than the Administration Server subnet."
