I had a problem downloading my email this morning. 3 emails - total size 778KB would not download. I left it for a few hours and tried again. Still no luck. I then paused my Kaspersky protection and the mails downloaded in seconds. After re-enabling protection I have had no problems retrieving email since. Can anyone explain this strange activity?

Sorry should have included this in my original post. KIS 2009. I am running Windows XP SP3.

To disable KIS I right clicked on the system tray icon and chose "Pause Protection", "Resume Manually"

And earlier? And just now? Did you install anything before the problem came?

PS: It's a subforum Protection for Small and Medium Businesses. Do you have a network administrator?

This seems to be an intermittent problem - it comes and goes. I had the same problem during the day today.
I haven't installed anything in the last few weeks.

I am my own network administrator.

OK this problem just got a whole lot trickier.

I have 2 PCs on my network, both are now giving the same problem that I originally reported, i.e.

I had a problem downloading my email this morning. 3 emails - total size 778KB would not download. I left it for a few hours and tried again. Still no luck. I then paused my Kaspersky protection and the mails downloaded in seconds.

Now, on top of this problem, one of the PCs is updating KIS every hour - at least 12MB at a time! The update completes and reports that the databases are up-to-date. On this PC I cannot download any email even when KIS protection is paused.

On the other PC I now have to disable KIS protection to download any file as well as when I need to download mail.

Something is definitely going on in the background here. Anybody able to help?

Pausing it may not shut it down, although it may stop kis from taking action. If the latter, then maybe a kis driver conflict.

What do you suggest? Uninstall and reinstall KIS?

Also why is KIS running such a huge update so regularly?

I don't have any suggestions. Trying to understand the problem-& how kis works. My updates vary from 1-2MB. What are yours. Anyway, if task manager says avp is in memory, & kis says it is inactive, any attempt to uninstall kis is bound to be only partially successful, in my opinion.

My updates are also usually in the range of 1-2MB. That is why I am concerned about the regular large updates.

I am getting quite desparate as I cannot go on disabling Kaspersky everytime I need to download email. Also this doesn't work on one of my PCs.

How about an error message or something to google with. Maybe an event in the log or a gsi report.

OK, looking through the logs I find "Network Operation Timed Out" errors during updates. It seems as if the update restarts from the beginning after each of these errors. This would explain the large update sizes as the updates are being re-run time and again.

I can find nothing regarding errors downloading emails, but this could also be a network error?!?!?
Greg B
OK, after struggling with this one for some time I finally found the problem.

The Kaspersky "MAIL DISPATCHER", which had previously been turned off, was waiting for a user response. What caused the biggest headache was that the "MAIL DISPATCHER" did not display anywhere on the screen so the user couldn't respond. As soon as I disabled the "MAIL DISPATCHER" in the Anti-Spam settings email downloads resumed normally.

The other problem of ftp downloads I mentioned in my earlier posting appears unrelated to this and has resolved itself.
Greg B
The other problem mentioned in my previous postings, i.e. large, regular KIS updates has also resolved itself
