Full Version: Install/removal causes BSOD

So today my computer wouldn't stay for 10 seconds on the Windows login screen without giving me a 0000008e BSOD and rebooting. I thought it was a hardware problem but I was able to boot into safe mode.

Under safe mode I managed to "semi" uninstall Kaspersky using the removal tool (since the windows installer doesn't work in safe mode) however this also gave me a BSOD. It seems to be partly removed in that Kaspersky doesn't start up anymore, and I can now start Windows normally, but it is still there in the program list and AVG is complaining that another AV solution exists on my computer (I'm trying to install it since KAV isn't working.)

If I try to uninstall the entry in the program list, it tries to set up KAV again and BSOD.

Is there an easy workaround for this?

Update: I manually deleted Kaspersky, but AVG makes the same BSOD during a full computer scan. Seems to happen when scanning the registry? Any ideas anyone?

OK turns out it is a KAV issue after all. The KAV part of the registry is corrupted, and anytime that part of the registry tries to be read/accessed/deleted, the computer BSODs.

I used a video camera to capture a Registry Mechanic scan, and it stopped at the following key before BSODing:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KasperskyLab\AVP6\profiles\Scan_Critical_Areas\data

In regedit, I can navigate to the above key, but if I try to delete the whole KasperskyLab folder then it BSODs.

What do I do?

Have now narrowed it down as far as possible. Expanding this key causes it to crash:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KasperskyLab\AVP6\settings\NSettings\Childs\ 0003\Childs\ 0007\

Any registry operations shouldn't lead to BSOD errors. Can you provide a memory dump, if possible?

I'd be happy to, how do I go about that? Keeping in mind that even clicking on the registry key above will BSOD?

I took a video of it, will upload it as soon as I can.

Please try to use the MS CleanUp utility to remove the Kaspersky AntiVirus: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us

I ran that tool and successfully removed the Kaspersky item in the programs list. However when I try to reinstall it again, I get the same BSOD.

What about AVG?

Please attach the report file of GetSystemInfo utility (GetSystemInfo.zip): http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=193238548

According the report file you have the AVG on your PC. If you want to install Kaspersky Anti-Virus you need remove AVG before.
Please remove AVG. Then create the new report file of GetSystemInfo.zip ( please don't create the report file of GetSystemInfo4.zip).
Thank you.

I removed AVG and rebooted before I tried to install Kaspersky. Then I got the BSOD and reinstalled AVG

Is it absolutely necessary to uninstall AVG and make another report?
