Full Version: Which updates for syslinux-based rescue disk?
Kaspersky Lab Forum > Beta Testing > Universal Updater

I would like to commend you all for developing, and offering FOR FREE, the "Kaspersky Updater"! Awesome, awesome, awesome! Don't know how others are putting up angry posts about a free utility that's currently getting the kinks worked out of it.

I, for one, am thankful for this and all the devbuild products.

I have some questions to ask on the "Kaspersky Updater" and haven't found the answers by looking through the forum. Hope that I haven't missed something in one of the posts. If so, I apologize in advance.

Here goes:
  • The "Kaspersky Updater" utility doesn't seem to have a selection for the syslinux-based Rescue Disk 2008. Which product def's should I choose for this rescue disk product? KAV versions 6, 7, 8? KIS versions?

  • In the Kaspersky Updater GUI, under "Home Products", there are 2 sections. One section is for KAV and the other for KIS. The version numbers in each section are the same. Doesn't KAV and KIS use the same definitions? Why the different sections? If I download the updates for KIS 8.0.0.506 aren't those going to be the same definitions as the KAV 8.0.0.506?

  • Aren't the definitions for all versions of Kaspersky Home products the same? For example, wouldn't the updates for KAV 6.0.2.[*-*] detect the same malware that the KIS 9.0.0.459 would detect? If so, why not just have one "check box" for "Home Products," regardless of the version number?

Thank you in advance for your time in helping me to understand.

Hello, welcome to forum!

1. I can answer this question a bit later.
2. Difference is the same as between KAV and KIS. KIS have many additional components (Firewall, HIPS, Anti-Spam etc.) and they are also regularly updated.
3. No, versions 6, 7 and 8, 9 have different kernels and type of bases. And btw, home 6x versions aren't supported (but updates are still released) smile.gif

Thanks for the info.

For question #2 -> Ahh... I realize now... of course the updates for KIS are more than just anti-virus updates. I wasn't thinking.

For question #1 -> I anxiously await your information/answer. Thank you in advance for your time on it. I can't seem to find concrete information on this anywhere.

take care

I'd love to be able to update the KRD and put it on a USB Flash Drive. Is that possible?

There is no option to update from local source in Kaspersky Linux-based Rescue Disk.

The way that I currently update the Linux-based rescue disk is to use the Kaspersky Updater utility to download the 8.0.0.506 definitions onto the USB that the rescue disk is on. Then, after I boot from the USB, I transfer the "Updates" folder onto the C: of the actual PC. Then I go into the settings for "Update" and add a new update source that points to the Update folder that I put on the C:

Kaspersky then updates and says that definitions are up to date.

What I'm left wondering is if the 8.0.0.506 are the best/right definitions to use. Could it be that there's some incompatibility by where the rescue disk thinks that the definitions files are up to date, but the ability to detect malware is somehow hindered.

I don't think that there will be problems. There are no special malware definitions for the rescue disk, it uses the ones for KAV/KIS 2009 or 2010.
