Error 1406 Installer cannot write to registry on clean XP Installation Options

Trying to install Antivrius 2012 (Got kav12.0.0.374nl_nl) on a just formated and reinstalled version of XP. Patched up to SP3 with all security updates. Installations goes fine until the final bits writing to the registry; Then it kicks up an error with:

error 1406: can't write value RetrPath for Key \software\kasperskylab\protected\avp12\profiles\updater\setting\def

Rights on the key is fine and should work. I can even enter keys myself.

There's nothing installed on the system yet except for office 2010 and previously mentioned security updates/servicepacks.

Welcome. Please add Everyone to Owner.

Change the permissions as described below. The general procedure should be the same in all Windows versions. However, the exact names of the options could be different.
1) Right click on the key and choose "Permissions".
2) Click on "Advanced" and select the tab "Owner".
3) Select "Everyone". If "Everyone" is not listed insert it manually via "Other users or groups" (simply write it into the text field).
4) Enable "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
5) Click on "Apply".
6) Select the tab "Permissions" and enable "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions of this object".
7) Choose "Everyone" and click on "Edit".
8) Grant "Full Control" by ticking the corresponding checkbox.
9) Confirm all dialogs with "OK"/"Yes".

Reboot when done with registry changes. Then try install again.

If successful, you can remove Everyone from Owner when done. Reboot.

Thanks for the tip. I eventually managed it by removing all inherited rights, setting everyone as the only people with rights, and as owner. That did the trick.
