Hi all. I'm new here, though I'm an old tech.
Found a link here: http://www.techmixer.com/kaspersky-rescue-...2009-using-dos/ to KAV's rescue CD so I thought I'd try it. It seems to work pretty well, but I wondered about the online updating procedure. I mean, KAV updates are freely (I'm assuming?) available from here: http://www.kaspersky.com/avupdates/zip and the procedure for getting them ready for use is straightforward (extracting them to a 'kavdefs' folder starting with the history pack, then weekly, then daily, overwriting as required) So I just wondered: Why not occasionally upgrade the RescueCD ISO\CDRW so that the online updates would be smaller and quicker to apply? Hey, I'm no Kaspersky expert. For all I know the updates from the link above may be totally unsuitable for the Rescue package. But comparing the update files with those in the ISO seem to show a lot of similarities. Apologies if this question has been covered, but I had a quick look around the forum and I couldn't see any specific references to the points I've covered. Thanks :-) |

You can use Bart's PE Builder : http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Kas...oval-Tool.shtml
PLUS http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=83531 Which is in Linux Rescue disk iso and you can read a lot here in the above mentioned LINK.But The LINUX RESCUE DISK is in beta form still. So I just wondered: Why not occasionally upgrade the RescueCD ISO\CDRW so that the online updates would be smaller and quicker to apply? Hello, Of course .... One step further should be a rescue CD without an update function , but then Kaspersky should have to offer several times a day another ISO so that the most recent security updates are always available. I am sure the Kasperksy experts know what they do, and i believe that the actual LINUX RESCUE DISK beta is the right tool. Anyway this is a tool you'll not use every day Berny +++ This post has been edited by Berny: 10.02.2009 12:17 -------------------- [1 - Vista Business SP2] : Fx 3.5 - KAV 9.0.0.736 CF2 (a)- Gsi 4.0 - MalwareBytes 1.36 Full - Secunia PSI 1.5 - Sandboxie 3.36.04

Thanks for your comments, folks.
Ibok: Re BartPEBuilder, that method requires a paid version of Kaspersky to run the plugin. And the link you provided to a Softpedia download of some sort of Kaspersky scanner is currently dead. The topic thread you linked to makes no mention of my question about using paid definitions to update the Rescue CD. Berny: Re Kaspersky needing to update their ISO several times a day, this is exactly how Avira have chosen to handle their free Rescue CD, which makes it a fairly fast solution. Once loaded, the CD-based scanner doesn't look for updates, it just does the scan and shuts down. I've been conducting a study of the various methods on offer because Yes, I frequently need an effective scanner every day. Here's the comparison, in alpha order: Avast Rescue Disc: Download updates in the host machine and rebuild the ISO before burning. Avira Rescue Disc: Download a fresh ISO in the host machine and burn a new disc before use. BartPE Rescue Disc: Download updates in the host machine and rebuild the ISO before burning (NOD32, v.2.7 signatures used here) BitDefender - Online updater (DOS) works in the target machine. F-Secure - Online updater (DOS) works in the target machine. Kaspersky - Online updater (DOS) works in the target machine, but it's not clear, from the interface, whether the updater has worked. In one place it seems to indicate that an update has occurred but elsewhere it says "Obsolete database". Another unusual thing about Kaspersky is that it establishes a cache of virus signatures in My Docs\All Users\App Data. Perhaps the other 'online updaters' do the same, I don't know as I haven't checked. I guess it would make sense to offload the signatures onto the hard drive, rather than try to store them in ram. Or maybe F-Secure and BitDefender's scanners clear the caches on exit? All the Rescue Disc were created in XP machines, and used on XP target machines. |
